Box Score
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men's soccer team (3-3-2, 0-1-0 SSC) began Sunshine State Conference play with a tough road loss against the defending NCAA National Champions, the Lynn Fighting Knights (4-3-1, 1-0-0 SSC), 3-1, Saturday.
The Sharks played an even first half but fell victim to a great free kick in the 20th minute. Javier Lopez Mochon chipped the ball into the opposite corner of the net from the right side. NSU reacted by getting on the offensive immediately. The attack culminated in the 25th minute when
Stefano Fanfoni (So., Cremona, Italy) was fouled in the penalty box. However, Lynn's goalkeeper Yannick Braeuer came up with a miraculous save to keep his team on top.
NSU stayed composed and on the offensive. In the 30th minute,
Viktor Jonsson (Fr., Reykjavik, Iceland) played a great ball to
Matthew Ilter (Sr., Lake Mary, Fla.), who scored from the right side of the box. It was Ilter's second goal of the week after scoring against Saint Leo three days prior. It was Jonsson's first collegiate assist.
The rest of the first half was an even battle. At the break, Lynn had the advantage on shots, 6-5, but NSU led in shots on goal, 3-2.
Jo Jien Lee (Fr., Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) made his debut midway through the first half and recorded his first collegiate save in the 45th minute from point-blank range.
The Sharks played much more conservative in the second half but still had multiple chances on offense. Lynn would lead for the second time in the match after a goal from Isaac Hamul in the 66th minute. Lynn answered again shortly after, as Mochon scored his second goal in the 68th minute.
NSU continued to push and had a chance to score when
Dylan Papa (Fr., Farmington, Conn.) took a clear shot from just beyond the box. Papa's shot sailed over the crossbar and the Sharks were not able to find the target for the remainder of the match.
The Sharks will next face Barry in Miami Shores, Fla. Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.
