MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men's soccer team (3-4-2, 0-2-0 SSC) took a tough road loss to the Barry Buccaneers (5-5-1, 2-0-0 SSC) Wednesday, 4-1.
The Sharks played nearly the entire match from behind after Barry scored two quick goals in the first three minutes. Joong Kim scored the opening goal for Barry and Thomas Coombes scored the second to put the Sharks in a deep hole.
The Sharks stayed aggressive for the remainder of the half but could not cut into the lead. NSU took 10 shots in the first half to Barry's eight. It was one shot away from being the highest total over the first 45 minutes this year.
Stefano Fanfoni (So., Cremona, Italy) and
David Robles (Jr., Miami, Fla.) combined for seven of the Sharks' shots.
NSU had a great opportunity to score in the 56th minute.
Matthew Ilter (Sr., Lake Mary, Fla.) went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but fifth-year senior Johnny Rodriguez made a veteran save. The play resulted in a corner kick and great header by
Erdi Guelac (So., Bavaria, Germany) but Rodriguez once again made a highlight save.
The Sharks scored their lone goal in the 60th minute from freshman
Dylan Papa (Farmington, Conn.).
Vincenzo Padula (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) connected with Papa from the back left corner of the field. Papa came to the ball and quickly chipped it into the bottom left corner of the goal. It was the second time Padula and Papa have connected on a goal this season.
Barry answered quickly with two more goals over the next six minutes of play. Michael Fernandez scored in the 63rd minute and Patrick Drmola capitalized on a corner kick in the 66th minute.
The Sharks ended the match with 19 shots, forcing seven Barry saves. Since joining the Sunshine State Conference, this was NSU's largest deficit in a loss to Barry, a team the Sharks have topped nine times in program history.
NSU will return from its three-match road trip on Saturday to face No. 10 Saint Leo at 7:30 p.m. at the NSU Soccer Complex.
