FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 4 Nova Southeastern basketball team routed Flagler to end play at the 2013 NSU Thanksgiving Classic, winning 92-50 at the NSU Arena on Saturday evening.
The Sharks (6-0) never trailed in the game, racing out to a lead of 9-2, and after Flagler (2-3) cut it to 14-9, going on a 16-3 run to move out by 18 at the 8:39 mark (30-12).
NSU ended the first half with an 18-4 stretch to lead by 31, 51-20. After going 0-for-3 on 3-pointers in the first half of Friday's win over Pitt-Johnstown, the Sharks were 8-of-20 Saturday, and would end up making 13 from long range in the game.
After the break,
Danielle Robinson (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) scored 15 of the team's first 24 to extend the lead to 40 at that point, 75-35 (9:37 remaining). She would lead the squad with 22 points and added a game-high 11 rebounds for her second career double-double.
Robinson was 7-of-11 from the field, 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and made 4-of-5 free throws. She was one of four Sharks in double digits, along with
Richelle Carach (Sr., Naples, Fla.), who had 16,
Jasmine Wilkins (Sr., Miami) with 15, and 14 from
Taylor Buie (So., Puyallup, Wash.).
The Sharks outrebounded Flagler on the night, 54-31. Besides Robinson's 11, Wilkins added seven boards,
Jessica Russi (Sr., Lake Mary, Fla.) had six, and
Amanda Burakoski (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Ashley Robinson (Fr., Jensen Beach, Fla.) each chipped in with five.
Russi's six assists led NSU to a 20-to-7 advantage in that category, followed by four apiece from Wilkins and
Alexis Murphy (So., Carlisle, Ohio), and neither of the latter two committed a turnover. Russi and Murphy shared team high with two steals, while Burakoski had two of the Sharks' four blocks.
The Shark defense held the nation's second-leading scorer, Shorty Spencer, to just 10 points on 5-of-17 shooting, and the Flagler team to an overall field goal percentage of just 33.8 percent. Simone High and Shelbi Lindsey were the leading scorers for the Saints with 11 points each.
Earlier on Satuday, in the Thanksgiving Classic opener, Florida Tech came back to defeat Pitt-Johnstown, 83-81.
NSU's next game is their Sunshine State Conference opener as part of a women and men's doubleheader at the NSU Arena, Dec. 7 against Florida Southern. The women's squads will tip off at 2 p.m., with the men's game afterwards.
