Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The No. 4 Nova Southeastern women's basketball team used an 18-0 second half run to dispatch the No. 24 Shaw Lady Bears on the second night of the 2013 Shark Invitational, 103-85 Tuesday from the NSU Arena.
The win marks the ninth consecutive for the Sharks (9-0), tying the program record set back in 2008. Shaw (5-3) had cut the NSU lead to 70-66 with 9:53 remaining, but the Sharks reeled off 18 straight over the next 3:58 to move ahead 88-66.
Danielle Robinson (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) had three consecutive 3-pointers during the run, and
Amanda Burakoski (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit her sixth and final '3' of the night to end the spurt.
In all, four players had at least 20 for the victorious Sharks, led by
Taylor Buie (So., Puyallup, Wash.) with 21, which included 5-of-6 3-pointers. Burakoski made 6-of-7 from behind the arc as part of her season-high 20 points, and
Richelle Carach (Sr., Naples, Fla.) and Robinson each had 20 as well.
Jasmine Wilkins (Sr., Miami) was just a basket short of joining her four teammates, finishing with 18 on 8-of-12 shooting. She tied for the team high of eight rebounds with
Jessica Russi (Sr., Lake Mary, Fla.). Russi had the Sharks' other four points, and was also again the team's main distributor, tying her school record with 15 assists on Tuesday, 11 coming in the first half.
"We gave a great team effort today," said head coach LeAnn Freeland. "Shaw is a strong program with talented players. Over the last three seasons, our programs have developed a rivalry and we knew they would give us a good game today. Our players displayed composure throughout the game to secure the win."
The Sharks had a big run before the halftime break as well, 16-1 in a span of just 2:26, turning a 33-30 deficit into a 46-32 advantage. Burakoski had three 3's in that run, and Carach added one as well.
All told, NSU made 17-of-30 3-pointers, shooting better from behind the arc (56.7 percent) than inside it (54.1 percent). They overcame Shaw's two leading scorers, Bryann Guyton with 27 and 24 from Micah Brooks, sending the Lady Bears to their second straight loss.
Earlier on Tuesday, Barry defeated Benedict to go 2-0 in the Invite, 82-68.
NSU will be back in action after the holiday break, Jan. 4 on the road at Eckerd. A win that night would make for the longest winning streak in women's program history.
