BOX SCORE
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The No. 16 Nova Southeastern baseball team (6-1) won its fourth straight game Tuesday on the road, as the Sharks took down old South Florida rivals, the St. Thomas Bobcats (7-2), 6-2.
The Sharks displayed offensive depth against the Bobcats, as the 7-through-9 hitters went a combined 5-for-11 with three runs and five RBI.
Eric Acevedo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) hit his first home run of the year, a two-run shot in the eighth inning. He finished the night with three RBI and a run scored.
Brett Clements (Sr., Riverview, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with a team-best two runs scored and an RBI.
NSU went pitcher by committee, using nine hurlers on the night.
Patrick Kulick (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) started and held the Bobcats to no runs and two hits.
Shane Hill (Sr., Davie, Fla.) (1-0) pitched a scoreless third inning and earned his first win of the year.
Clements put the Sharks ahead in the second inning with a one-out double to centerfield. After a second out was posted,
Brooks Fleming (Jr., Palm City, Fla.) earned a RBI in his first at-bat of the night on a single down the right field line.
The Bobcats showed their strength and nearly erased the Sharks’ one-run lead in the fifth inning. The Sharks were in a hole, with the bases loaded and only one out on the board.
Roberto Baroniel (So., Miami, Fla.) entered the game and erased any momentum the Bobcats gained by punching out the next two batters swinging. Baroniel was on point against St. Thomas, pitching 1.2 innings and striking out four batters.
In the sixth inning, the Sharks created a little more room when
Jose Rodriguez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) singled, advanced to third base on errors and eventually was walked in. Acevedo patiently drew the bases-loaded walk for his first RBI of the night.
St. Thomas left the tying run on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but the home team ran out of time in the eighth, when the Sharks put the game out of reach.
Anthony Angulo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) started the rally with a double down the right field line. Clements immediately plated him with a RBI single to centerfield. Clements wouldn’t stay on base long either, as Acevedo brought him in with his homer that put the Sharks up by five runs.
The Bobcats would score once in each of the eighth and ninth innings, but could not spark enough offense to break the Sharks’ big lead. In the ninth, NSU capped off its scoring night with a big hit from
Julian Loret de Mola (So., Miami, Fla.). The Florida Atlantic transfer hit a tripled to right-centerfield and cruised home on a wild pitch.
Mike Gonzalez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) ended the night by pitching to the final batter and earning the 'K' with bases loaded, securing a save.
The Sharks will now move on to a high-profile weekend series against No. 2 Delta State on the road beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
