CLEARWATER, Fla. – After the opening day of competition at the Sunshine State Conference Championships on Wednesday, both of the Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are in first place.
The No. 18 women’s team tallied 121 points, 44 better than second place Tampa. On the men’s side, the No. 13 Sharks recorded 113 points and are 24 points ahead of Florida Southern.
The women kicked off the start of the championships, competing in the 1,000-yard freestyle where three Sharks placed in the top five.
Jessica Rocheleau (So., Jacksonville, Fla.) led off for the Sharks, taking second place with a time of 10:16.49. Following behind her in third place was
Sara Akoubian (Jr., Run Dacula, Ga.) with a time of 10:20.21. Rounding out the top five was
Kelsea Smith (Sr., Edina, Minn.) who landed in fifth place with a time of 10:25.85. All the women made NCAA Division II B qualifying time standards.
The Sharks' most dominant event on the men’s side was the 1,000-yard freestyle.
Oskar Nordstrand (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden) beat his own SSC meet record with a time of 9:10.59. Nordstrand was the only swimmer to make an “A” qualifying standard in the event. Following behind Nordstrand were teammates
Florian Mehlan (Jr., Moors, Germany),
Cameron Chambers (Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla.) and
Chris Norris (Jr., Tallahassee,Fla.), each finishing with B-cut times.
The next event was the 800-yard freestyle relay as the NSU “A” team finished second with a time of 7:26.94, which topped the A-cut qualifying mark. Racing for the Sharks were
Erin Black (Sr., Fort Myers, Fla.),
Kristen Ann Zielinski (Fr., Cheasapeake, Va.),
Ashley Bransford (Jr., Santa Cruz, Aruba) and
Lauren Chapple (So., London, England).
The men’s 800-yard freestyle relay followed next with the Sharks “A” team of Nordstrand,
Michael Zislin (So., Lighthouse Point, Fla.),
John Michael Hayes (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Mehlan recording a time of 6:37.02, good for a B-cut time and second place in the event.
The second day of the SSC Championships will kick off Thursday with the prelims at 10 a.m., and the finals beginning at 6 p.m. Continue to check back to
