BOX SCORE
CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Nova Southeastern baseball team (6-2), in the first game of a three game series with No. 2 Delta State (4-0), had a bit of trouble generating offense today to keep up with the Statesman, falling, 13-0.
The Sharks fell behind early in the contest, getting outscored, 10-0, in the first three innings before recording their first hit
In the top of the fourth,
Alex Marrero (Sr., Miami, Fla.) had the first spark of offense with a hard hit stand up double to the right field wall, which was followed by a base on balls for
Brandon Sedell (So., Davie, Fla.). The spark was slowly fizzled after the Statesman converted a strong defensive play, turning two on a hard hit ball up the middle by
Jose Rodriguez (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.).
The two teams held each other off for three scoreless innings until Delta State recorded two more runs in the seventh to extend the lead, 12-0.
The Sharks had a second spark of offense in the top of the eighth off a single by
Blake Boyd (Sr., Jupiter, Fla.), which turned into two bags due to a throwing error, and advanced
Ryan Woodrey (So., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) to third after being walked during his at bat. With runners in scoring position, NSU was unable to put together a series of hits and spark a late-game rally.
Delta State put one more on the board in the home half of the eighth and shut down the Sharks in their last attempt for a comeback in the ninth to take the first game, 13-0.
The Shark used a few pitchers in the game starting with
Zachary Westcott (Jr., Weston, Fla.), who earned the loss after allowing nine earned runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings pitched.
Tyler Redding (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) took the bulk of the innings, tossing 4.2 innings of relief while allowing a run on three hits.
Casey Kopec (Fr., Coral Springs, Fla.) worked 2.0 innings and surrendered three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
The Sharks will be back at it again Saturday with a shot at redemption against the Statesmen in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. EST.
