BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 16 Nova Southeastern tennis team (2-3, 1-2 SSC) won its first Sunshine State Conference match of the season Sunday, defeating the No. 13 Rollins Tars (2-2, 1-2 SSC) at home, 5-4.
The Sharks earned the win by collecting points early, winning all three doubles matches by a score of 8-6. The Sharks changed up their lineup from the previous weekend, which produced results.
Austin Lavallii (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) moved up into the top doubles flight and paired with
Sabrina Kierberg (Fr., Munich, Germany) to beat Elissa DeCampli and Ashley Rosenberg.
In the second doubles pairing,
Alexandra Johansson (So., Sydney, Australia) and
Bianca Roberts (So., Tampa, Fla.) defeated Callie Whitlock and Ashley Loft. In the third slot, freshmen
Iryna Serdyuk (Boca Raton, Fla.) and
Carlee Rizzolo (Livingston, N.J.) took down Mariana Salvador and Carli Davis.
The Sharks needed only two singles wins to seal the team victory, and the Sharks moved in that direction with a win in the sixth flight from freshman
Luisa Pintado (Guadalajara, Mexico) over Emma Wookey, 6-3, 6-0.
From there, drama began to build, as Rollins nearly erased the Sharks’ lead. Rosenburg pulled an upset over NSU’s Johansson, 6-4, 6-0. Charlotte Cote (So., Montreal, Canada) also struggled in the third flight, losing to Salvador, 7-5, 6-3. In the fifth seed, Roberts fell to Whitlock, 6-0, 6-0.
The day came down to the final two matches, which both went to three sets. The Sharks only needed one win and got it when Kierberg defeated DeCampli in the top flight, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. It was Kierberg’s first match at the top of NSU’s singles lineup. In the final match of the day in the third slot,
Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) lost a marathon match against Davis, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
The Sharks will return to the court on Feb. 22 against Eckerd at home at 1 p.m.
