BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A seven-run third inning by Palm Beach Atlantic gave the Sailfish the lead for good as they downed the Nova Southeastern baseball team Tuesday night, 9-4.
The Sharks (6-5) started off well against PBA starter Jonathan Kies (2-1), scoring runs in each of the first two innings. In the first, a single to right-centerfield by
Ryan Woodrey (So., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) scored
Alex Marrero (Sr., Miami), who had reached on a double. The following inning,
William Rudolph (Jr., Parkland, Fla.) singled, advanced to second on an error and third on a groundout, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kavan Thompson (Fr., Melbourne, Fla.). It was Thompson’s first career RBI.
PBA (9-4) had runners on in each of the first two innings against NSU’s
Patrick Kulick (So., Coral Springs, Fla.). But the wheels came off in the top of the third as the first six PBA batters reached and scored. The big hit of the inning, which came after Kulick (0-1) was relieved, was a bases-loaded double by Brian Walker.
The Sharks got runs back in each of the fourth and sixth innings, cutting the game to 7-4. In the fourth, with two outs, Thompson singled for his first NSU hit. He was plated on a deep double to right-center off the bat of
Carlos Asuaje (Jr., Weston, Fla.).
Two innings later, the Sharks plated an unearned run.
Brett Clements (Sr., Riverview, Fla.) reached to start the inning on a single up the middle, advanced on a sacrifice and error, and a fly out, and scored on another error on Thompson’s stolen base of second. The Sailfish picked up the victory despite committing five errors in the game.
PBA added two insurance runs in the seventh inning and claimed the final margin of victory at 9-4. These two teams meet up again next Tuesday, Feb. 26, the next game for each squad. First pitch is again at 6 p.m.
Jose Rodriguez (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.) led the Sharks with four hits on the night. Asuaje had two hits in the loss.
On the mound,
Kenny Miranda (So., Loxhatchee, Fla.) and
Julian Loret de Mola (So., Miami) combined to end the night with two scoreless innings of relief. Loret de Mola’s ninth was a perfect 1-2-3.
