No. 20 Women and FSC to Face Off on National TV This Saturday

Tipoff from Lakeland is noon on Saturday, on CBS Sports Network

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 20 Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team will take on Florida Southern this Saturday, with the game to be broadcasted on national television.

“We are excited to play on CBS Sports Network,” said head coach LeAnn Freeland. “What a great way to showcase Nova Southeastern University and our athletic department. Our staff is expecting the players to represent NSU with discipline and pride.”

The Sharks (15-5, 7-2 SSC) and Mocs (8-12, 2-8 SSC) will tip off at noon from Lakeland, Fla. As a result of a 3-pointer at the buzzer Wednesday, the Sharks’ three-game winning streak was snapped by Eckerd, 63-61.

“The season is too short to focus on one setback,” said Freeland. “We must refocus quickly to get ready for Florida Southern.”

NSU now trails SSC leader Florida Tech by one-half game in the conference standings. After Saturday, there are five more games to go in the regular season, and the Sharks will have plenty of opportunities to make up the deficit, including playing FIT on Feb. 27.

“The SSC race is far from over,” said Freeland. “There is a great amount of parity in the league this year.”

Like the Sharks, the Mocs’ game on Wednesday also came down to the final minutes. They had the last shot and a chance to tie, but fell to Barry, 64-61. FSC has lost five straight games, and eight straight in conference.

Earlier this season, in Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 12, these two teams met in the Sharks’ first home game in 55 days. NSU won, 76-53, breaking open a close game midway through the first half with a 15-2 run to take the lead and keep it for good.

“Florida Southern is physical and leads the league in rebounding,” said Freeland. “In order to win, we must outwork them for 40 minutes.”

SHARK STATS
  • Meixandra Porter (Sr., Chantilly, Va.) has led the Sharks in scoring the last three games. She had 19 against Barry on Jan. 30 and 21 against Saint Leo on Feb. 6, with those efforts earning her the SSC Player of the Week award. She followed that up with a team-high 18 versus Eckerd.
  • For the season, Porter's 16.4 points per game rank her second in the SSC. She is the conference leader in steals (2.6) and 3-pointers made per game (also 2.6), and is third in 3-point percentage (38.3%) and fifth in free throw percentage (84.4%).
  • Amanda Burakoski (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) is second in the league in both field goal percentage (54.8%) and 3-point percentage (44.0%), and is third in 3-pointers per game (2.2).
  • Danielle Robinson (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) is fifth in the SSC in scoring (13.5), with Burakoski just behind her in sixth at 13.4 PPG.
  • Jessica Russi (Jr., Lake Mary, Fla.) eclipsed the century mark in assists with three against Eckerd. She has 101 on the season, for a conference-leading average of 5.1. She has been atop the SSC in this category since the first statistical report. She also entered into the program's all-time top 10 in blocks after swatting away two shots against the Tritons, with 34.
  • Robinson's five steals against Eckerd tied her season- and career-high marks. She and Burakoski are tied for fifth in the conference, each averaging two steals per game.
  • Porter is three steals away from 100 in her NSU career. Her 97 rank her fifth in the program's history. She is third all-time in 3-pointers made, with 105, while Robinson is fourth at 95.
  • Porter also already has the fifth-highest amount of 3-pointers made in an NSU season, knocking down 51 this year. She is three behind her total from last year, and 12 away from tying Eliza Allen's program high of 63 in 2007-08.
  • The Sharks lead the SSC in eight team categories: scoring offense, scoring margin, assists, steals, turnover margin, assist/turnover ratio and 3-point field goals made. They are second in both 3-point field goal percentage and rebounding defense.
