Baseball Defeats Caldwell at Neutral Site

Sharks finished off their full week with, 4-1 win on the road.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
– The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (12-7) finished up its full week with a victory today against Caldwell College (1-2), which was played at Santaluces Baseball Complex in Lantana, Fla.

The Sharks offense and pitching staff got off to a fast start for the second game in a row and took care of their opponent in the first couple innings.

Jose Rodriguez (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.) and Julian Loret de Mola (So., Miami) took control for the Sharks offensively with Rodriguez going 3-for-4, scoring twice and Loret de Mola going 2-for-3 with a triple, double and three RBI.

The pitching crew of six did and exceptional job, throwing a combined six hitless innings, facing a total of 30 batters in the contest with nine total strikeouts combined. Mike Gonzalez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) got the start for NSU and increased his record to an even, 2-2. Gonzalez pitched three hitless innings, facing nine batters with four strikeouts.

The first inning consisted of two runs on three hits for the Sharks, which included the hit of the game, a two RBI triple to right center by Loret de Mola, which scored Rodriguez from second, who reached with a stand-up double and Brandon Sedell (So., Davie, Fla.) from first, who beat out a throw from short to single.

NSU chalked up one more run in the third after shutting down the Cougars, defensively. With Angel Navarro on third, reaching on a fielders choice and stealing two bags, Carlos Asuaje (So., Weston, Fla.) drove home the Sharks third run with a hard hit ball through the right side to extend the lead, 3-0.

Both teams remained scoreless in the following two and a half innings until the Sharks capitalized once again in the bottom of the fifth off a double to the fence in left center by Loret de Mola, which scored Rodriguez from first who reached on a single to right field. This was the final run for the Sharks, which extended the lead by four, 4-0.

The Cougars remained hitless until the combined no-hitter was broken in the top of the eighth on a grounder through the left side off the Sharks fourth reliever of the game Roberto Baroniel (So., Miami, Fla). The Cougars recorded both hits in the eighth and their only run before being shut down by closer, Kenny Miranda (So., Loxahatchee, Fla.) in the ninth to end the game and capture the win, 4-1.

The Sharks are back in action again, Tuesday, March 12 against St. Thomas Aquinas College at the NSU Baseball Complex with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
