Baseball Takes Second Game with Shutout Against Bentley

Sharks' Contaldi pitches a two-hit shutout to win, 5-0.

BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
– The Nova Southeastern baseball team (8-6) won their second of three games against Bentley (3-5), behind outstanding pitching by Vinnie Contaldi (Sr., Jupiter, Fla.), who threw a two-hitter shutout in the Sharks' 5-0 victory.

Contaldi (3-1) pitched a complete game for the Sharks on the hill, shutting down the Falcons on two hits with five strikeouts while facing only 29 batters (just two over the minumum).

Carlos Asuaje (Jr., Weston, Fla.), for the second game in a row, led the Sharks' offense, along with teammate Brandon Sedell (So., Davie, Fla.). Asuaje went  2-for-5 on the day with one run, three RBI and four stolen bases. Sedell also added an RBI for the Sharks, as he was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The bottom of the first proved to be all the Sharks needed offensively, scoring two runs off the get-go. Asuaje led off with a single and stole two bases to get all the way to third. Jose Rodriguez (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.) walked, and Sedell hit an infield single to third to round Asuaje for the first run. Rodriguez would cross as well on a groundout to short by William Rudolph (Jr., Parkland, Fla.) to extend the lead to 2-0.

After five and a half scoreless innings, the Sharks added a few insurance runs to solidify the deal against the Falcons. With the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Asuaje rocked a hard-hit ball to right-center for a standup double, clearing the bases to extend the Sharks' lead to 5-0.

Contaldi retired the first 16 batters he faced before a bunt hit in the top of the sixth inning by Lamarre Rey. He hit the next Falcons' hitter, but escaped the inning by stranding Rey on third. Bentley got their only other hit in the seventh, but that runner was erased on a double play, and Contaldi was perfect in the final two innings to preserve the 5-0 win.

The Sharks will be back at it again Sunday afternoon for the third game of the series against Bentley. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at the NSU baseball complex.
