Baseball Begins Series with 11-9 Loss to Barry

Sharks rally late but come up just short.

BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern baseball team (17-9, 2-2 SSC) started the weekend on a rough note, taking an 11-9 loss to the Barry Buccaneers (19-10, 5-5 SSC) at home Saturday to begin a three-game set.

Alex Marrero (Sr., Miami, Fla.) led the charge offensively, going 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. All three of his RBI came off a home run past centerfield in the bottom of the second. Kevin Reynolds (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) started in the five hole and reached base on every plate appearance. He finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI.

The Sharks started their strong offensive night off in the second inning when Marrero hit his second home run of the season. The bomb was set up by Brandon Sedell (So, Davie, Fla.), who led off with an infield single. Reynolds followed by drawing a walk in his first at bat of the day. On a 2-2 count, Marrero blasted the ball over centerfield to put the Sharks ahead early.

Barry put themselves within a run of the Sharks in the fifth inning, before the Sharks put another three-spot on the board, pushing the score to 6-2. Carlos Asuaje (Jr., Weston, Fla.) led off with a walk before stealing his Division II-best 28th base. Jose Rodriguez (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.) drove him home on a single through the left side, while Sedell duplicated the same hit in the next at bat.

Reynolds earned his RBI with another base hit through the right side. Brett Clements (Sr., Riverview, Fla.) drove in the Sharks’ final run of the side on a single to left centerfield. Michael Melendez (So., Miramar, Fla.) kept the rally going with a hit of his own, but the Sharks stranded three runners on base and left the door open for a Barry comeback.

The Bucs would post two runs in the sixth inning, and completely turn the tide with five runs scored in the seventh frame. All five runs came with two outs on the board and none were earned. NSU left the bases loaded in the eighth inning, but not before Barry poured on another pair of runs.

NSU rallied late, scoring three runs over the last two innings to come up just short. Eric Acevedo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) led off the eighth with a double to left field and was eventually driven in by Angel Navarro (So., Miami Lakes, Fla.). In the ninth inning, Reynolds began another rally with his third double of the year. He would eventually score off a Clements single to right field. With runners on the corners, Melendez drove in the final run of the game on an infield fielder’s choice, thanks to a great play by the second basemen. The Sharks would bring the tying run to the plate but could not equalize.

The Sharks will look to win the series on Saturday with a doubleheader against Barry beginning at 1 p.m.
