Track and Field Finishes Strong at Miami

More school records fall at the meet.

MIAMI
– The Nova Southeastern track and field finished a strong day at the Miami Invitational, as school records fell for the fifth meet in a row, and three more Sharks earned first-place finishes.

Ben Futerman (Sr., Freehold, N.J) broke his discus record for the second time this season with a throw of 41.94 meters, which was good enough for a second-place finish. He broke the record set earlier this season at the Hurricane Invitational.

In the 400-meter dash, Talyn Washington (So., Royal Palm, Fla.) broke the NSU record with a time of 47.76, breaking the mark previously set by Robert Moise in 2012.

And with a leap of 14.13 meters, Derrick Wood (Jr., Royal Palm, Fla.) broke his own school record in the triple jump, which landed him in fourth place. He broke the previous record his freshman year at NSU. Wood was also successful in the high jump, jumping 1.93 meters to finish third, just missing his own school record in the event, and came in fourth in the long jump with a jump of 6.01 meters. Wood's teammate, Aj Franklin (Fr., Pensacola, Fla.) placed second in the latter event, leaping 6.20 meters.

Sharks with first place finishes on the day were: Alexandria Palm (Jr., Winnebago, Ill.), in the 3,000-meter run, with a time of 11:01.69; Darren Hendricks (Fr., North Port, Fla.) in the javelin with a throw of 41.59 meters; and Vanessa Munley (So., Moosic, Pa.) in the pole vault, leaping 3.25 meters. Munley also finished sixth in the long jump (4.72 meters).

Futerman and Hendricks also had success in other throwing events. Hendrick came in fifth in the discus, throwing 36.49 meters. Futerman led the pack in the shot put, throwing 12.80 meters for third place. Hendricks followed just behind, placing fifth with a throw of 10.78 meters, and added a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw (38.04 meters).

Jessica Nyiro (Fr., Davie, Fla.) had a great individual day as well. She came in second in the discus with a throw of 37.58 meters, third in the shot put with a heave of 10.46 meters, and fourth in both the javelin (23.75 meters) and hammer (30.38 meters).

In the men’s pole vault event, Ryan Jerothe (So. New Port Richey, Fla.)was the top finisher for NSU, coming in second at 4.55 meters. Ian Towne (Jr., South Walton, Minn.) came in third at 4.30 meters. Also in the javelin, Towne and Jerothe placed third and fourth with throws of 39.45 and 32.53, respectively.

In the 200-meter dash, Johniqua Stafford (Sr., Fort Worth ,Texas) provisionally qualified for nationals again, improving her time to 24.38. Her time was good enough for fifth place.

Women's 4x400 relay - Stafford, Jessica Osteen (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.), Williams, Monica Sapp (Fr., Miami, Fla.), third, 3:50.57
Women's javelin - Brittany Todaro (So., Plantation, Fla.), fourth, 2.95
Women's 400-meter hurdles - Osteen, fourth, 1:02.19.
Men's 400 meters - Cameron Hemenez (So., Orlando, Fla.), sixth, 49.75
Men's 800 meters - Uguens Decius (Fr., Miami, Fla.), sixth, 1:59.48
Women's 400 meters - Quannisha Allen (Fr., St. Augstine, Fla.), sixth, 1:00.43; MaJose Foster (Fr., Lauderdale Hill, Fla.), eighth, 1:02.26.
Women's 1,500 meters - Brittaney Smash (So., Arlington, Texas), sixth, 5:05.22
Women's long jump - Kuhar, seventh, 4.77 meters

The Sharks will be back in action on April 4, as they attend the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., at the University of Florida.
