The No. 21 Nova Southeastern tennis team (6-9, 2-4 SSC) returned to Sunshine State Conference play Thursday in a home loss to the Florida Southern Mocs (9-5, 2-4 SSC), 5-4.

The Sharks battled in a close match all day, which started with Florida Southern getting a 2-1 edge in doubles play. The Sharks got a win in the second flight, as Alexandra Johansson (So., Sydney, Australia) and Charlotte Cote (So., Montreal, Canada) defeated Victoria Spagnuolo and Christie Nunnemann, 8-2.

However, the Sharks lost in the first and third draws to fall into an early hole. Austin Lavallii (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) teamed up for the second straight time with Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.), but lost to the region’s fourth ranked doubles team, Magda Riutort and Sabine Goge, 8-3. By the same score, Bianca Roberts (So., Tampa, Fla.) and Iryna Serdyuk (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) fell to Olivia Spagnuolo and Laura Wichmann.

In singles play, the Sharks nearly completed the comeback but were one decision short. In the third flight, Carlee Rizzolo (Fr., Livingston, N.J.) earned her biggest win of the year over Nunnemann, 6-4, 6-2.

Luisa Pintado (Fr., Guadalajara, Mexico) returned to her winning ways in the sixth slot, defeating Crystal Copeland, 6-4, 6-3.

The day came down to the final match to end, with Johansson falling in three sets to No. 18 Riutort in the top flight match, 8-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-2. The Sharks also lost in the fourth and fifth draws. Cote nearly forced a third set in her match, but fell to Olivia Spagnuolo, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3). Roberts lost her match to Wichmann, 6-2, 6-3.

The Sharks will look to bounce back on Saturday, when they travel up north to play Saint Leo at noon.
