SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 21 Nova Southeastern tennis team (6-9, 2-4 SSC) returned to Sunshine State Conference play Saturday in loss on the road to the Saint Leo Lions (14-2, 6-1), 5-4.
The Sharks battled in a close match all day, which started with Saint Leo getting a 2-1 edge in doubles play. The Sharks got a win in the second flight, as
Alexandra Johansson (So., Sydney, Australia) and
Charlotte Cote (So., Montreal, Canada) defeated Emily Singleton and Phoebe Di Leo, 8-3.
However, the Sharks lost in the first and third draws to fall into an early hole.
Austin Lavallii (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) teamed up with
Sabrina Kierberg (Fr., Berlin, Germany) but lost to the doubles team of Pauline Helgesson and Maria Benkirane, 8-6. By the same score,
Bianca Roberts (So., Tampa, Fla.) and
Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) fell to Coralie Pesenti and Adrianna Daszkiewicz.
In singles play, the Sharks nearly completed the comeback but were one decision short. The Sharks won the majority of the top draws, taking the first and second. In the first flight, Kierberg defeated Peseneti, who is nationally ranked in the top-40, 6-1, 6-4. In the second flight, Johannsson defeated Helgesson, 6-3,6-0.
Luisa Pintado (Fr., Guadalajara, Mexico) earned another victory in the sixth slot, defeating Di Leo, 6-1, 6-2.
The Sharks tough some tough losses in the middle draws, as
Carlee Rizzolo (Fr., Livingston, N.J.) fell to Daszkiewicz in the third slot. The Sharks also lost in the fourth and fifth draws. In the fourth flight, Roberts fell to Benkirane, 6-0, 6-1. In the fifth flight,
Iryna Serdyuk (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) lost her match to Singleton, 6-0, 6-1.
The Sharks will be back in action on Thursday, as they take on Sunshine State Conference opponent Lynn, at 2 p.m.
