DAY ONE RESULTS
ROME, Ga. – The Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s track and field teams completed the first day of competition at the Peach Belt Conference Championships. Both teams are in good position to win a conference title leading into the final day of competition.
After day one, the women have taken the lead right away and are in first place with 60 points. Alabama-Huntsville trails behind them with 58 points. The Shark men are in third place behind North Carolina Pembroke and Alabama-Huntsville with 29 points.
Peri Bowman (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) was crowned the first NSU conference champion, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 11:11.69. Following behind in second and third place were teammates
Rose Howell (Fr., St. Louis, Mo.) and
Alexandria Palm (So., Winnebago, Ill.), who came in with times of 11:56.21 and 12:00.74, respectively.
In the field events,
Vanessa Munley (So., Moosiac, Pa.) won a conference title in the pole vault with a jump of 3.33 meters.
Brittany Todaro (Fr., Plantation, Fla.) and
Janell Azaret (So., Miami, Fla.) came in second and third with clearances of 3.03 meters and 2.58 meters, respectively.
Brandi Nichols (Jr., Inverness, Fla.) broke the school record for the second time this season in the 10,000-meter run. Her time of 43:55.09 was a minute faster tha her previous school record set at the Florida Relays in mid-March. She placed ninth in the event.
The 4x100-meter relay team of
Jessica Osteen (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.),
Monica Sapp (Fr., Miami, Fla.),
Nicole Poole (Fr., Altimonte Springs, Fla.), and
Ciona Williams (Fr., Stockton, Ca.) came in second place with a time of 46.94 meters.
In the 400-meter dash preliminaries, Osteen earned the first seed as she heads into the finals with a time of 57.19. Sapp and
Quannisha Allen (Fr., St. Augustine, Fla.) came in second and third with times of 58.92 and 58.99, respectively. All the women made NCAA provisional qualifying standards.
In the 100-meter dash, Williams made an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 12.02 meters, which puts her in the third-place position heading into the finals.
Jessica Nyiro (Fr., Davie, Fla.) was the lone Shark in the hammer throwing, with a mark of 29.46 meters. Her time was good enough for seventh place.
On the men’s side, the 4x100-meter relay team of
Aj Franklin (Fr., Pensacola, Fla.),
Cameron Hemenez (So., Orlando, Fla.),
Talyn Washington (So., Royal Palm Beach, Fla.), and
Patrico Morency (So., Naples, Fla.) shattered the school record with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 41.21.
Franklin continued his record-breaking success individually in the high jump event. His leap of 6.46 meters broke teammate
Derrick Wood's (Jr., Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) record set in 2011 of 6.34 meters. Wood also competed in the event and came in 11th with a jump of 5.95 meters.
The senior duo of
Nico Crecco (Mendon, N.Y.) and
Omar Hernandez (Rio Pico, Ariz.) came in second and third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with times of 9:59.14 and 10:02.21, respectively.
In the 400-meter dash preliminaries, Washington will be seeded in first place going into the finals with an NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 48.44.
The Sharks will continue competition Saturday starting at 11 a.m. The events will be the 1,500-meter run, 400-meter dash, 100-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, 800-meter run, 200-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles, 5k run, and the 4x400 relays. For the field events, the men and women will compete in the discus throw, triple jump, high jump, and shot put, while the men only will hold the pole vault.
