No. 21 Tennis Dropped in SSC Backdraw to No. 26 Florida Southern, 5-1

Sharks to play final match of the season Saturday.

BOX SCORE

BOCA RATON, Fla. –
The No. 21 Nova Southeastern tennis team (7-13) lost its backdraw match of the 2013 Sunshine State Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament to No. 26 Florida Southern (16-6), 5-1, at the South County Regional Park.

The Sharks took one out of two doubles matches to start the day, with the two losses coming down to the wire. In the second doubles draw, Sabrina Kierberg (Fr., Berlin, Germany) and Austin Lavallii (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) earned the team’s lone win on the day, defeating Victoria Spagnuolo and Christie Nunnemann, 8-4, in the most decisive doubles match for either team.

The Sharks had a chance to jump ahead in doubles play, but the Mocs squeaked out two close matches. In the top flight, sophomore duo Alexandra Johansson (Sydney, Australia) and Charlotte Cote (Montreal, Canada) lost to Sabine Goge and Olivia Spagnuolo, 9-7. The third draw was the last to finish, as a tiebreaking pro set was needed. In the end, Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) and Luisa Pintado (Fr., Guadalajara, Mexico) fell to Joalis Dominguez and Laura Wichmann, 9-8 (7-2).

Playing from behind, the Sharks lost three singles matches before anyone could earn a win, effectively ending their day. In the top flight, Kierberg lost to No. 30 Goge, 6-1, 6-1. In the second draw, Johansson ended up on the short end against Dominguez, 6-2, 6-3. In the final match of the day, Pintado took the first set against Wichmann, 1-6, before the Moc took the final two, 6-0, 6-0.

The Sharks will now compete in the seventh-place match of the SSC Tournament, where they will face Florida Tech or Tampa, Saturday at 9 a.m.
