GAME ONE BOX | GAME TWO BOX
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team fell in both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader at Lynn, 8-0 and 7-2.
The Sharks (24-16, 6-9 SSC) were scoreless for 17 innings during the weekend, before plating two in the sixth inning of Saturday’s second game and bringing the tying run to the plate. But with no outs and the bases loaded, Lynn (29-15, 12-6 SSC) turned to closer Andrew Melchor, who got a double play, and then retired the last four batters of the game for a six-out save.
GAME ONE
Carlos Asuaje (Jr., Weston, Fla.) accounted for three of the team’s four hits in the shutout loss to Jed Vandernaald and the Fighting Knights.
Asuaje led off the game with a double, added another double in the third and singled in the ninth, but was stranded on second base after all three of his hits. He also walked in the sixth, but was erased on a double play.
Brandon Sedell (So., Davie, Fla.) notched the other Shark hit, a single in the second.
Vandernaald struck out nine Sharks and had only the one walk in the complete-game victory.
Zachary Westcott (Jr., Weston, Fla.) took the loss, giving up 11 hits and five runs in 4 1/3 innings, falling to 3-3 this season.
GAME TWO
The Sharks fell behind 5-0 to the Fighting Knights, who scored three times in the second and plated three more in the fifth. Through five innings (and in all of game one), no NSU baserunner had even reached third base. But the Sharks took advantage of three Lynn miscues to close the deficit in the sixth
Michael Melendez (So., Miramar, Fla.) led off the inning with a single that got past Lynn leftfielder Paul Stortini for an error, moving him to second. The next batter,
Jose Rodriguez (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.) reached on an error on a misplay by first baseman Jason Matusik, and as the ball caromed to second baseman Ryan Lashley, he threw to the bag, but no one was covering. That allowed Melendez to score the first NSU run since the sixth inning of Friday’s series opener.
After a walk to
Julian Loret de Mola (So., Miami) put runners on first and second, the Fighting Knights turned to Melchor. He induced Sedell into a double play, which scored Rodriguez to make it 5-2, and finished the inning by forcing a groundout by
Brett Clements (Sr., Riverview, Fla.).
Lynn scored two of their own in the bottom of the inning and Melchor had a 1-2-3 seventh to finish off the doubleheader and the series.
Besides Melendez, Sharks with hits in game two were Asuaje, Clements and
Eric Acevedo (Sr., Miami).
Mitchell Buerosse (Jr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) dropped to 5-4 on the season with the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings.
The Sharks return home to Fort Lauderdale to face No. 7 Tampa at the NSU Baseball Complex next weekend. Game one first pitch is 6 p.m. this Friday, April 26, and the series wraps up with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
