Baseball Sharks Sweep PBA in Saturday Doubleheader

Asuaje drives in five runs in the two victories

GAME ONE BOX | GAME TWO BOX

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern baseball team held Palm Beach Atlantic to nine hits combined in Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of the Sailfish at the NSU Baseball Complex, 6-2 and 7-1.

The Sharks (20-13) had Vinnie Contaldi (Sr., Jupiter, Fla.) and Josh Glick (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) combine to only allow six hits and two runs in game one, while in the nightcap, three pitchers allowed only three Sailfish hits. Shortstop Carlos Asuaje (Jr., Weston, Fla.) knocked in five runs on the day, including a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning of game two to seal the sweep.

Game One
After PBA struck first in the top half of the opening inning, NSU tied it at 1-1 on a Jose Rodriguez (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.) sacrifice fly, and took the lead for good with a three-run second.

Angel Navarro (So., Miami Lakes, Fla.) gave the Sharks the 2-1 lead with a single to right field, plating Brandon Sedell (So., Davie, Fla.), and two batters later, Asuaje’s double knocked in both Navarro and Alex Marrero (Sr., Miami) to extend the advantage to 4-1.

After the Sailfish cut it to 4-2 with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly, the Sharks struck back for two more in the sixth, with both runs coming via batters getting hit by pitches with the bases loaded. Rodriguez and Sedell each were credited with RBI’s in the frame.

Glick came on in relief of Contaldi (3-3) with runners on the corners in the seventh inning, and got the last two outs without a run scoring. He had a 1-2-3 eighth, and stranded two more runners in the ninth to earn his first collegiate save.

Game Two
The Sharks took an early 3-0 lead on two home runs, and added four insurance runs in their last at-bat for the 7-1 victory.

Brooks Fleming (Jr., Palm City, Fla.), a former Sailfish, plated the game's first two runs with a deep shot over the left field fence in the second, scoring he and Eric Acevedo (Sr., Miami). Then in the fourth, Acevedo hit a high flyball that carried out left of the scoreboard for a solo shot and a three-run Shark lead.

Starter Mitchell Buerosse (Jr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) allowed just two hits in five innings to earn the victory, improving to 4-3 on the season, while Mike Gonzalez (Sr., Miami) and Julian Loret de Mola (So., Miami) combined for two innings of one-hit relief. The lone Sailfish run came in the sixth on a Joel Buchko home run, but the two-run deficit was short-lived.

For the third time on the day, Rodriguez knocked in a run without benefit of a hit, this time a pinch-hit bases-loaded walk to make it 4-1. Then Asuaje hit a towering shot the opposite way, over the leftfielder’s head and to the fence to score Acevedo, Fleming and Rodriguez for the final margin.

The Sharks and Sailfish (20-15) wrap up their three-game set on Sunday with a 1 p.m. finale.
