BOX SCORE
WINTER PARK, Fla. – Brandon Sedell had four hits, including three doubles, and five runs batted in, as the Nova Southeastern baseball team routed Rollins in their series opener Friday night, 15-5.
Sedell (So., Davie, Fla.) doubled in each of the first, third, and seventh innings, and added an RBI single in the ninth, and
Brett Clements (Sr., Riverview, Fla.), added four RBI in the 10-run victory.
Vinnie Contaldi (Sr., Jupiter, Fla.) went 7 2/3 innings, and had a span where he retired 16 of 17 batters, to move his record to 5-4 on the year.
The Sharks (26-18, 8-11 SSC) got things started quickly with five runs in their first at-bat.
Carlos Asuaje (Jr., Weston, Fla.) led off with a scorching comebacker that Rollins starter Anthony Figliolia was able to get a glove on, but Asuaje reached safely and the wild throw allowed him to reach second.
Michael Melendez (So., Miramar, Fla.) followed with a single, and after a walk to
Jose Rodriguez (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.),
Kevin Reynolds (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) knocked in two with a single through the left side.
One out later, Sedell notched his first double of the night, down the leftfield line, to score Rodriguez. Clements was next, and his single to left plated two more, for the five-run lead.
Rollins (22-20-1, 7-11-1 SSC) was able to get a run in each of the first two innings off Contaldi to cut the deficit to 5-2, before Sedell struck again in the third.
Reynolds and
Alex Marrero (Sr., Miami) began the frame with back-to-back singles, and Sedell got them both in with a two-bagger to left-center.
Angel Navarro (So., Miami Lakes, Fla.) brought him in with a single up the middle and an 8-2 lead.
The Tars pushed three more in in the third, aided by two Shark errors, but then Contaldi buckled down. With his groundout of Yuta Okazaki to end the inning, he began his stretch of 16 of 17 outs, and was only replaced when two batters reached with two outs in the eighth.
Meanwhile, the Sharks scored once more in the sixth (a Melendez double to score Asuaje), twice in the seventh (another Sedell RBI double, plus a run-scoring single by Navarro) and twice more in the eighth (Clements’ second two-run single).
In that Rollins eighth, Contaldi retired the first two, but gave up a single and hit-by-pitch.
Roberto Baroniel (So., Miami) came in to punch out Okazaki to leave both runners stranded and keep the 13-5 lead.
The final scoring came in the visitor’s ninth, on an error and Sedell’s RBI single.
Kenny Miranda (So., Loxahatchee, Fla.) pitched the final frame, and the game ended on a 6-4-3 double play, Asuaje to
Kavan Thompson (Fr., Melbourne, Fla.) to Melendez.
Sedell led the way with four hits, while besides Clements, five more Sharks had two baseknocks in the 17-hit attack: Asuaje, Melendez, Reynolds, Marrero and Navarro. Sedell scored four runs, Asuaje three (he reached base five times), and Reynolds and Marrero two each.
The two teams will meet in a Saturday doubleheader to wrap up the series. First pitch in game one has been moved up to 11 a.m. from Winter Park, and all the action will be carried live
