Men’s Soccer Powers Through Ave Maria, 1-0

Enarsson scores only goal for NSU after 13 Ave Maria saves.

Box Score

AVE MARIA, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men's soccer team earned a hard-fought road victory over Ave Maria Wednesday, 1-0, in Ave Maria, Fla.

Karl Enarsson (So., Gothenburg, Sweden) scored the game-winning goal for NSU in the 85th minute. Stefano Fanfoni (So., Cremona, Italy) earned his second assist of the year after sending the ball into the box from 25 yards out. The ball bounced off the keepers hands and right to Enarsson, whose hard work paid off with an easy score.

It was Enarsson's first collegiate goal after 18 career starts at center back. Over the first three matches of the year, five players have scored their first career goals. All six goals this season have come from six different individuals.

It was fitting that the goal came from a defender, as the Sharks' backline was flawless on the night. The back row of Enarsson, Nicola Brivio (So., Gallarte, Italy), Stefano Noce (Sr., Salerno, Italy) and Mattia Marzetti (So., Rome) played all 90 minutes and only allowed two shots on goal, both saved by Andrea Giombetti (Jr., Rome). This was Giombeti's second straight clean sheet, which improved his goals against average to 0.68.

On offense, the Sharks were trying to penetrate a great effort by Ave Maria goalkeeper Andres Martin. Martin racked up 13 saves on the night. The effort was two saves short of the program high for saves against, set by Florida Tech in 1997. Nine different players recorded a shot on goal against Ave Maria, with Enarsson's strike in the 85th minute making the difference.

The Sharks had several opportunities to score in the match, with Ave Maria pulling out all the stops to defend their home turf. Guido Riffeser (Jr., Bolzano, Italy) came close to scoring early, sending a shot from 20 yards out off of the cross bar. Enarsson also took a free kick just behind the penalty box in the first half, but the Sharks could not convert. NSU also took a season-high nine corner kicks on the night.

NSU will take a week off before hosting No. 1 Lynn on Wednesday, Sept. 18 in a nonconference match at 5 p.m. at the NSU Soccer Complex.
