FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women's basketball team, now ranked No. 3 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, head out on the road to meet up with the Florida Tech Panthers, Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. in Melbourne, Fla.
The Sharks (14-0, 5-0 SSC) are now one of five undefeated DII women's teams, with last week's No. 2, Gannon, falling on Saturday to Edinboro. NSU is now just behind No. 1 Bentley and new No. 2, Emporia State. Spotless No. 4 Colorado Mesa is next, followed by Gannon, and then the final remaining team without a loss, No. 6 Harding.
NSU extended their program-record consecutive win streak with two tough in-conference victories last week. They held off both Barry (78-76) and No. 13 Rollins (63-60) after having gone 11 straight games in which they won by 13 or more.
Jasmine Wilkins (R-Jr., Miami) earned SSC Player of the Week after averaging 16.5 points and nine rebounds in the two wins.
Jessica Russi (Sr., Lake Mary, Fla.) had 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists against Barry. In the win over Rollins,
Taylor Buie (So., Puyallup, Wash.) scored 14 to lead the Sharks, while
Danielle Robinson (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) had 10 to push past 1,000 for her career.
Florida Tech has won six of their last seven games, and three out of their last four SSC matchups. The only loss in that span came to Rollins on Jan. 8, 55-44. The Panthers feature the league's second-highest scorer and preseason All-American by Women's DII Hoops Bulletin, in Kayk Wilson.
The junior guard averages 18.7 points per game, and also ranks second in the conference in both steals (2.6) and 3-pointers made per game (2.6). Rita Acevedo is the most efficient point guard statistically, with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.3. She is tied for third in assists (4.5), is fourth in steals (1.8) and is fifth in free throw percentage (85.1).
