Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern women's soccer team picked up a Sunshine State Conference win in the rain on Wednesday night, topping border rival Lynn by the score of 5-0.
The Sharks (5-6-0, 2-5-0 SSC) got on the board extremely early against the Fighting Knights (4-9-0, 1-6-0 SSC), as
Cydney Niedermeyer (So., Fort Myers, Fla.) earned a start on the front line and paid immediate dividends. Just 2:10 into the match, in what turned out to be the game-winner, she took a pass that deflected off a Lynn player and beat their starting goalkeeper, Caitlin Shaver, on a 1-on-1 breakaway.
Sierra Lelii (R-Jr., Seminole, Fla.) was next into the scoring column with two straight goals, both off deflections off of her teammate's shots. The first was a rebound after
Victoria Pecci's (So., Oswego, Ill.) attempt at 8:15; the second (her 10th of the year) came at 20:27 after a rocket by
Julia Nytorp (Jr., Örnsköldsvik, Sweden) that ricocheted off the second Lynn keeper, Katie Nimitz, right to the oncoming Lelii.
Lelii now is tied for third in the SSC in goals scored, and became the fifth player in the conference to reach double digits on the season.
The Sharks outshot Lynn 11-1 in the first half, and added two more scores after the break, each the first of that player's NSU career. First was
Sara Lundberg (So., Linköping, Sweden)on a perfect cross by Niedermeyer, finding the Swede transfer wide open at the top of the box in the 59th minute. The second came seven minutes later on the first goal of freshman
Balea Schumacher's career (New Port Richey, Fla.), with Nytorp notching her second assist of the night.
Overall, the shot tally was 24-9 in favor of the Sharks, with 14 NSU shots on target.
Amanda Kopale (R-So., Cape Coral, Fla.) made five saves in the shutout victory, bolstered by the backline of Pecci,
Cameron Wylie (Jr., Dallas, Texas),
Agnes Holmquist (Fr., Borlänge, Sweden) and
Stephanie Moench (Jr., Austin, Texas), the latter three playing all 90 minutes of the match.
The Shark women, and more specifically
Kaitlyn Cauffman (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) and
Kelsey McCusker (Sr., Stone Harbor, N.J.), will have Senior Night festivities prior to their next match, a 7 p.m. tilt this Saturday against Eckerd at the NSU Soccer Complex. That will take place following the completion of NSU and Eckerd men, beginning at 4:30.
