LIVE VIDEO | LIVE STATSFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (5-6-1, 2-4-0 SSC) will return home to host the Eckerd Tritons (3-9-1, 1-4-1 SSC) at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in a crucial Sunshine State Conference battle.
The Sharks currently place sixth on the SSC table with six points and are in the driver's seat for the last spot in the SSC Tournament. However, Eckerd is coming off a win over the Tampa Spartans and have become hot at the right time. At four points, Eckerd could slide into the tournament picture with a win on Saturday.
In sixth, the Sharks find themselves one point behind the Spartans, who face Rollins Saturday in their final match of conference play. A Sharks win and a Tampa loss would solidify fifth place for NSU, regardless of the outcome of NSU's final conference match against No. 4 Lynn on Wednesday, Oct. 29. However, a loss for the Sharks Saturday would force NSU to take points against the fourth ranked team in the nation in order to keep the season alive.
Over the last few years, Eckerd has served as a thorn in NSU's side, with the last NSU win coming in 2012. However, NSU is 12-5-0 all-time against Eckerd and 4-2-0 at home against the Tritons since joining the SSC. The last NSU win over Eckerd was a nail-biter, with the Sharks taking a 1-0 victory.
Nicola Brivio (Jr., Gallarate, Italy) assisted on the game-winner and
Andrea Giombetti (Sr., Rome, Italy) earned the shutout.
Despite the recent momentum, statistically, Eckerd has had some trouble this season. The Tritons enter this match ranked last in the SSC in shots (139), goals (16) and goals allowed (26), while having also received the most yellow cards this season (30). Nick Jackson leads the team in scoring with six goals (tied for fourth in the conference) on just 22 shots and 12 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Alex Gott is tied for second in the SSC with 52 saves.
