LIVE VIDEO | LIVE STATSFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University soccer teams will host South Florida rivals Barry Wednesday in a doubleheader at the NSU Soccer Complex. The women will face the No. 9 ranked Bucs at 4:30 p.m., followed by the men's clash at 7 p.m.
The Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team (4-3-0, 1-2-0 SSC) returns home and looks to build on their first Sunshine State Conference win of the year, Saturday in overtime over Florida Southern, 3-2.
The second goal of the match from
Julia Nytorp (Jr., Örnsköldsvik, Sweden) pushed the Sharks above .500 and into the wins column in the conference. It's the second time the junior has scored two goals in a match, the first Shark to do that in the same season since Malin Broberg in 2011. The Sharks as a team have already equaled last season's goal total of 20 in less than half as many matches. Nytorp is second on the team in goals (5), assists (2), points (12) and shots (20), trailing only
Sierra Lelii (R-Jr., Seminole, Fla.), at six, three, 15 and 34, respectively.
After Saturday's upset of then-No.7 Rollins, Barry (5-1-1, 2-0-0 SSC) jumped from 21st all the way to ninth in Tuesday's NSCAA/Continental Tire DII poll. Coming into Tuesday's slate of matches, the Bucs are one of only three teams without a loss in conference play, along with 3-0 Saint Leo and 1-0 Eckerd.
Barry has outscored their seven opponents 14-5, and have only given up two goals in-conference. Goalkeeper Becca Rogers has a sterling 0.59 goals against average, second in the SSC, and has 19 saves and an .826 save percentage. Shanice Robe, in wins over Lynn and Rollins last week, scored two goals and assisted on two more, earning her SSC Offensive Player of the Week. She, Lauren Manna and Amanda Traynor pace the team with three goals apiece, with Ashley Harlan leading the way with three assists.
All-time, Barry leads the series 5-4-2, with an even 2-2-2 mark at the NSU Soccer Complex. Last season's match was a 2-0 Bucs win in Miami Shores, and the last home match, in 2012, ended in a 2-2 tie, with the Sharks coming back from a 2-0 halftime deficit and
Amanda Kopale (R-So., Cape Coral, Fla.) recording 10 saves.
The men's team (4-3-1, 1-2-0 SSC) is coming into Wednesday's rivalry match with solid momentum following Saturday's 3-1 victory at Florida Southern. In the match,
Victor Nirennold (So., Rennes, France) scored the opening goal in the sixth minute, setting the tone for what would be an excellent offensive showing.
Emilio Blanco (Fr., Weston, Fla.) and
Viktor Jonsson (So. Reykjavik, Iceland) would also score in the victory.
The match was another display of the team's depth in 2014, with much of the offense being spread over the entire roster. NSU has scored 13 goals this season, coming from nine different student-athletes. Overall, 13 total Sharks have either contributed a goal or an assist this season.
Historically, the Sharks are 5-4-2 against the Barry Buccaneers (4-3-1, 1-1-0 SSC) since joining the SSC in 2004, and 4-1-1 at the NSU Soccer Complex. The Sharks had a great run at the beginning of their tenure in the conference, going undefeated in the first six matches between the two. That run included five wins, one of which came in the 2004 SSC Tournament.
Since 2008, Barry has had much better success against NSU. However, that success has largely come in Miami Shores. The last time Barry came to the NSU Soccer Complex, the match ended in a 1-1 draw, with
Nicola Brivio (Jr., Gallarate, Italy) assisting on the team's lone goal.
Frank Lustig and Nico Gercke lead the Bucs with four goals and nine points each, while Ruaridh Kay and Connor Randel have both added three. In their 3-1 win on Saturday over Rollins, Kay scored twice in the first half, both times assisted by Manuel Perez.
