Ford Women's Basketball Classic, in Savannah, Georgia.
The 2-0 Sharks will first play this Friday at 5:30, against Clayton State, and then take on the hosts the following day at 4 p.m. The team is coming off opening weekend wins over Alabama-Huntsville (80-40) and Shorter (87-68). They currently lead the Sunshine State Conference in scoring at 83.5 points per game, at a league-best margin of 29.5 points. They also lead, on this young season, in field goal percentage (52.0), 3-point percentage (43.6), 3-pointers made (8.5), assists (19.0), steals (13.0) and blocked shots (5.0).
Both wins showed a balanced scoring attack, with seven players scoring between 7-14 points in the opener and six in that range in the latter victory.
Danielle Robinson (Sr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) is second in the SSC individually (16.0), with
Kayla Wright (So., Lauderhill, Fla.) third (15.5),
Jasmine Wilkins (R-Sr., Miami) tied for fifth (14.0) and
Monaye Merritt (R-Jr., Philadelphia) tied for ninth (13.0).
Jessica Valley (R-Jr., Lafayette, Ind.) is also in double digits at an even 10 points per contest.
Valley and Wright are tied for the team lead in rebounding at 5.5 a game, while Valley and Merritt are equal at the top in assists (4.5). Defensively, the Sharks forced 23 and 22 turnovers, respectively, during the opening weekend, while collectively holding their two opponents to 33.3 percent shooting from the field.
Their opponent on Friday, Clayton State, is coming off a 22-7 year, and their 10th straight bid to the NCAA Tournament. The year prior, they were 32-1, and they were DII National Champions in 2011. This season thus far, the Lakers are 2-0, as they have defeated Wingate (77-71) and Lenoir-Rhyne (63-59).
On Saturday, the Sharks will face Armstrong State, who just notched their first win of the season in a rout on Tuesday, 107-44 over Trinity Baptist. They had lost their first two matchups, against SSC opponents Saint Leo (68-62) and Rollins (71-67). Last season, the Pirates were 21-8, and they too were a part of the NCAA Southeast Regionals, falling in the finals (the Sweet 16 round) to Limestone.
