PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern softball team (9-5) earned its fifth straight win, beating Goldey-Beacom 13-0 in the second day of the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish Showdown. NSU scored 13 runs off of 12 hits, with eight players notching a RBI and nine scoring a run.
Game One
The Sharks scored 13 runs in two innings to defeat the Lightning. The game ended in the five-inning mercy rule, as the Lightning walked five NSU players and only earned two hits in the game.
In the first inning, Melanie Spicola (Sr., Umatilla, Fla.) grounded out to second base but brought Carly Comito (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) in for the first run of the game. Samira Tanaka (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) came in two batters later and earned a two-RBI single. Tanaka led the team offensively, driving in four runs on two hits. Lorena Spaulding (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) set up the last run of the inning, getting a RBI on a sac bunt, giving NSU the 4-0 lead.
The Sharks scored nine runs off of six hits in the third to create the 13-0 shutout. Katey Blummer (Fr., Naples, Fla.) picked up her second collegiate RBI with a single to left field, bringing Maegan Lee (Jr., Meade, Colo.) home. Holly Roberson (Sr., Dunnellon, Fla.) got the next hit with a RBI double to right field, bringing in pinch-runner Jennie Von Doellen (Sr., Hudson Bay, Cana.) and advancing Blummer to third. Next, Tanaka would notch her fourth RBI, doubling down the left field line to bring home Spicola and Blummer.
Spaulding would drive in the next runs for the Sharks, getting her second RBI off a sacrifice bunt. Lee then came up to bat and brought Tanaka home for the fourth time. Comito would put a nice finish to the game, tripling to the deep left corner of the field and notching the last RBI of the game.
Comito also played on the other side, pitching for four innings of the game and only allowing two hits. Taylor Rotz (Fr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) would close the game for the Sharks, finalizing the 13-0 shutout.
Game Two
Due to inclement weather, the game against Flagler was paused late Saturday. The game will resume Sunday at 3 p.m. in the top of the fourth with the Sharks atop the Saints, 7-4.
