FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 4 Nova Southeastern women's basketball team will have its final nonconference matchup of the regular season when they host Palm Beach Atlantic this Saturday at 2 p.m. in the NSU Arena.
The Sharks (18-1, 9-1 SSC) had their fourth-highest margin of victory last time out, in Wednesday's 84-48 win over league foe Eckerd. All 10 Sharks that dressed had at least four points and two rebounds, with three in double digits in scoring. As a bench, NSU outscored the Tritons 34-11, and they outshot the visitors overall 52.8 percent to 30.5 percent.
Palm Beach Atlantic (7-16) has lost six in a row, with the stretch including a home loss to the Sharks on Jan. 11, 77-64. In that contest,
Amanda Burakoski (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) led NSU with 18 points, followed by 17 from
Taylor Buie (So., Puyallup, Wash.) and 16 points and nine rebounds by
Jasmine Wilkins (R-Jr., Miami).
In that evenly-played game, NSU and PBA had the same exact shooting lines, 24-of-59 for 40.7 percent, and both sides also pulled in 37 rebounds. The final margin came as the Sharks made six more 3-pointers (nine to three) and seven more free throws (20 to 13). Burakoski had four of the nine from behind the arc, and of the team's 20-of-28 free throws,
Jessica Russi (Sr., Lake Mary, Fla.) was a perfect 6-of-6.
The Sailfish have been led throughout the season by senior Kasie Parker, who did have 26 against NSU, though she was just 9-of-24 from the floor. The PBA newcomer leads the way at just a shade under 20 points a night and is just one point away from setting the school's all-time single-season scoring record. She is also a terrific defender, as her 3.2 steals per contest ranks seventh in DII.
PBA will only have two more games following Saturday, one more against an SSC opponent (Barry) with the other being their home finale vs. Northwood. The independent school has played home-and-away against all SSC schools, going 3-13 in those matchups. They defeated Florida Southern (70-53 on Dec. 14) and swept both games against Lynn (74-51 on Nov. 27 and 64-61 on Jan. 4).
The Shark win over PBA in January marked the seventh straight in the series, and a victory Saturday would give NSU a 10-0 mark out-of-conference for the season. The team is still a game ahead in the SSC standings, now of just Tampa, winners of seven straight. The Spartans snapped a tie with Rollins on Wednesday, defeating the Tars on their home floor, 78-57.
