Tennis Drops Marathon Match to Bethune-Cookman, 6-3

Sharks win doubles, 2-1.

RESULTS

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern tennis team (1-1) dropped a near-five hour match Saturday at home, falling 6-3 to NCAA Division I Bethune-Cookman.

"I couldn't be happier with how the girls came out and competed after doubles," stated head coach Stephen Schram. "Each player, one through six, fought so hard. It was a good match for us. it will get us ready for our conference matches."

NSU came out strong and won one doubles match. After sophomores Sabrina Kierberg (Berlin, Germany) and Iryna Serdyuk (Boca Raton, Fla.) dropped the top flight, 8-4, NSU tied it up in the second flight. Juniors Charlotte Cote (Montreal, Canada) and Alexandra Johansson (Sydney, Australia) stayed undefeated with a hard-fought 9-7 win over Chinatsu Kajiwara and Gaby Chinchilla. In the third flight, Linda Kornienko (So., Fort Myers, Fla.) and Juliet Serabian (So., Plantation, Fla.) lost close to Elizabeth Nyenwe and Valentina Beresiarte, 8-6.

NSU dropped four matches in singles, but every loss went down to the last point. The Sharks did earn wins from both Kierberg and Kornienko. In the second flight, Kierberg earned the day's most dominant win over Maria Sablina, 6-4, 6-0. Kornineko's fifth set win over Laura Rodriguez went three sets, but the sophomore pulled it out, 6-3, 6-7, 10-7.

Up top, former All-American Johansson fell in two close sets to Mina Matsuba, 6-4, 7-5. Carlee Rizzolo (So., Livingston, N.J.) went three sets in the third flight against Nyenwe but lost, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7. Cote played in the fourth set and broke her overall unbeaten streak against Chinchilla, 6-2, 6-3. In the six hole, Bianca Roberts (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) filled in as a last minute sub and fought valiantly. She went to three sets against Ancia Ifill but lost, 7-5, 2-6, 10-6.

NSU will have no time to rest, as they host No. 8 Saint Leo on Sunday at 1 p.m.
