FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 15 Nova Southeastern tennis team (7-3) swept the Ave Maria Gyrenes (1-5) at home Friday, 9-0.
Prior to the match,
Kamryn Blackwood (Sr., Farmington, N.M.) was honored during Senior Day festivities for her four-year career at NSU. Blackwood had an outstanding day, winning in both singles and doubles play. The senior teamed with
Iryna Serdyuk (So., Boca Raton, Fla.) to defeat Ave Maria's Jessica Cocks and Emily Buxton, 8-2. Those two Gyrene points would be the only she would give up all day, as she beat Gladys Chaparro in singles, 6-0, 6-0.
NSU and Ave Maria only competed in two doubles and five singles matches because Ave Maria forfeited the bottom seed in each. NSU took an 8-0 win in the top flight of doubles play, with
Sabrina Kierberg (So., Berlin, Germany) and
Alex Kaeser (Fr., Woodstock, Ga.) defeating Mary Kate and Eileen Lee.
The closest match of the day was in the top singles draw, featuring
Alexandra Johansson (Jr., Sydney, Australia) and Mary Kate Lee. Johansson won a close first set, 6-4, before bageling Lee in the second, 6-0. NSU won the other three draws by the same score, 6-0, 6-0. Kierberg, who is now undefeated at 10-0, defeated Eileen Lee,
Carlee Rizzolo (So., Livingston, N.J.) beat Cocks and
Juliet Serabian (So., Plantation, Fla.) topped Buxton.
NSU will travel down to Miami-Dade County Saturday to take on old rival St. Thomas at 1:30 p.m.
