No. 16 Tennis Falls in Close Battle with No. 10 Florida Southern

Sharks take a 5-4 loss to Mocs.

LAKELAND, Fla.
The No. 16 Nova Southeastern tennis team (13-8, 3-4 SSC) lost a close road match to the No. 10 Florida Southern Mocs (14-3, 4-2 SSC), 5-4, Saturday.
 
The Sharks shuffled their lineup in doubles play and had positive results, taking a 2-1 lead going into singles play. NSU won in the second and third doubles draws. Sabrina Kierberg (So., Berlin, Germany) and Alex Kaeser (Fr., Woodstock, Ga.) moved to the second draw and defeated Olivia and Victoria Spagnuolo, 8-6. Sophomores Linda Kornienko (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Iryna Serdyuk (Boca Raton, Fla.) won for the first time as a team this season against Laura Wichmann and Joalis Dominguez, 8-3. NSU's only loss in doubles came at the top flight, with Alexandra Johansson (Jr., Sydney, Australia) and Carlee Rizzolo (So., Livingston, N.J.) falling to the nation's 12th ranked doubles team of Magda Riutort and Sabine Goge, 8-2.
 
"Credit to Florida Southern who competed very well in singles after being down, 1-2," stated head coach Stephen Schram. "I am especially proud of Alex Johansson who competed very well and came up with a very big win in singles against a very good player."
 
Johansson won her top-flight singles match in three sets over Riutort, a top-40 player in the nation. Johansson won the first set, 6-3, before falling close in the second, 6-7. Johansson took the tiebreaker, 10-6. NSU took its final point in the fourth draw, when Kornienko defeated Dominique Friedrichs in another three-set thriller. Kornienko had to come from behind after falling in the first set, 4-6. She would win the second, 7-6, before taking the tiebreaking set, 10-4.
 
The Sharks took four losses in singles play, sealing the one-point victory for Florida Southern. Goge, a national top-50 player, defeated Kierberg, 6-4, 6-3. In the third draw, Rizzolo fell to Olivia Spagnuolo, 6-1, 6-3. In the fifth flight, Bianca Roberts (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) lost to Olivia's sister, 6-1, 6-2. Finally, Serdyuk fell to Pamela Paradis, 6-2, 6-2.
 
NSU will play in its final nonconference match on April 8 on the road against Palm Beach Atlantic at 6 p.m.
