FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 16 Nova Southeastern tennis team (13-9) was upset on the road Wednesday at Palm Beach Atlantic (14-7), 5-4.
NSU entered singles play down 1-2 after dropping a pair of matches in doubles play. Sophomores
Iryna Serdyuk (Boca Raton, Fla.) and
Linda Kornienko (Fort Myers, Fla.) were the lone doubles winners by a score of 8-2.
Alexandra Johansson (Jr., Sydney, Australia) and
Carlee Rizzolo (So., Livingston, N.J.) played in the top flight for the second straight match and lost their match, 8-4. NSU had a close match in the second draw, but the team of
Alex Kaeser (Fr., Woodstock, Ga.) and
Sabrina Kierberg (So., Berlin, Germany) ultimately fell, 8-6.
NSU needed four wins in singles play to take the overall match, but had to settle for a 3-3 split. NSU earned wins in flights 2-4. Rizzolo bounced back from her doubles loss to win in No. 2 singles play, 6-3, 6-4. In the third draw, Kornienko completed a perfect day with a victory, 6-3, 6-1.
Bianca Roberts (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) had the widest margin of victory in the fourth flight at 6-1, 6-1.
PBA earned the three singles victories it needed, starting in the top flight. Johansson lost to nationally-ranked Veena Vasquez, 6-2, 6-2. In the fifth draw, Serdyuk split the day with a loss, 6-2, 6-4. Finally, Kaeser fell in the sixth and closest draw of singles play, 8-6, 6-3.
NSU will wrap up its regular season this Saturday on the road against No. 8 Rollins at 10 a.m.
