LIVE NSU AUDIO | LIVE ROLLINS VIDEO | LIVE STATS | GAME NOTESFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – For the second time this season, the No. 13 Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team will take on another top-10 opponent, traveling to Winter Park, Florida, Wednesday to tangle with the No. 10 Rollins Tars at 5:30 p.m.
The then-No. 4 Sharks (11-2, 3-1 SSC) fell in their previous marquee matchup, by one point to No. 9 Tampa, 76-75. Since that loss, they have reeled off six straight victories, the last three coming in conference play. On Saturday, they notched a convincing 86-69 home win over Florida Southern, with seniors
Danielle Robinson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with 22) and
Jasmine Wilkins (Miami, 17) combining for 39 points. Robinson set the NSU women's program mark for career 3-pointers in the win as well.
Rollins (11-1, 3-0 SSC) is one of just two teams remaining with an unblemished league mark, after the Sharks' win over FSC (Florida Tech is 13-0 overall and also 3-0 in the SSC, and is also the only other ranked conference team at No.16). The Tars too have notched six straight wins, with their lone loss coming against this week's new national No. 1, Lewis, 75-65 at home on Nov. 29.
Two seniors lead Rollins in Emmalee Schill and Ashley Losch at 12.5 and 10.8 points per game, respectively. Schill is the team's top shooter (.524) and 3-point shooter (.455, third-best in conference) and Losch leads the team in rebounds (7.2, fourth in the league), blocked shots (1.3, fifth) and free throw percentage (80.0).
As a team, the Tars lead the SSC and are among the nation's leaders in a number of categories, including having the league's best defense statistically in points against at 51.2, second in the NCAA, and field goal percentage by an opponent (31.8, first in the SSC and third in the nation). League-wide, they also have the best rebounding margin (+9.6, 10th) and commit the fewest turnovers per game (13.7, 18th).
Conversely, the Sharks continue to have one of the league's best offenses, as they are second in field goal percentage (48.5, which is third nationally) and in scoring (77.0, 29th), and have moved up in both 3-pointers made (7.8, second/19th) and 3-point percentage (37.8, second/24th). They have the league's best assist-per-game average (17.9, 12th) and on the other side of the ball, rank second in steals (10.6).
Individually, Wilkins, at 66.7 percent, is now the top field goal shooter in all of Division II, and Merritt leads the league in steals at 2.8, which is 27th nationally. She and
Jessica Valley (R-Jr., Lafayette, Ind.) combine for 9.2 assists a game, second and third-best in the conference individually. Wilkins (15.2), Robinson (14.6), Merritt (11.8) and
Kayla Wright (So., Lauderhill, Fla. at 10.6) are all north of 10 points per game for the Sharks.
Last season, these two teams were each ranked in both regular season matchups, and split the series, each winning on their home floor. In Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 18, No. 4 NSU beat No. 13 Rollins 63-60. Then on Feb. 15 in Winter Park, in overtime, No. 18 Rollins beat No. 4 NSU 74-71. The Sharks are looking for their first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent since topping No. 17 Tampa last season, 56-53 on March 17 in the NCAA South Regionals. A week prior, they had beaten No. 16 Rollins (80-70) and No. 17 Tampa (64-55) in back-to-back days at the SSC Championships, and they have now won five of seven in the series against the Tars.
