The Sharks (13-4, 5-2 SSC) are coming off one of their best statistical performances of the season with a 21-point win over the then-No. 9 Florida Tech Panthers on Saturday, 73-52. The team shot 52.8 percent, their second-highest clip since the first week of the year, and gained a season-high 47 rebounds. Defensively, they held the league's best offense to 25.7 percent shooting (19-of-74), the lowest by an NSU opponent this season, and the Panthers were nearly 30 points below their season average (81.5 to their 52 on Saturday).
Jasmine Wilkins (R-Sr., Miami) led four in double digits in the win over FIT with 17 points, along with seven rebounds. She and
Kayla Wright (So., Lauderhill, Fla.) helped the Sharks to a 42-14 points-in-the-paint advantage. Wright had 13 of the team's 23 bench points, and the two shot 13-for-19 combined. On the season, the duo makes good on nearly 61 percent of their shots (169-of-278, 60.7), ranking first and fifth in the conference, respectively, with Wilkins third in the nation. Also starring on Saturday, with 14 points each, were
Danielle Robinson (Sr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and
Jessica Valley (R-Jr., Lafayette, Ind.). Valley added 10 rebounds for her second NSU double-double.
Saint Leo (6-11, 1-6 SSC) is paced by post player Melissa Jackson and point guard Chachi Guzman. Jackson averages a double-double on the season at 14.9 points and 10.8 rebounds. The latter number is first in the conference and 25th nationally. She's also the team leader in blocks (second in the conference) and field goal percentage. Guzman leads the team and is in the top six in the league in assists (fifth), steals (sixth) and free throw percentage (third). Her 12.0 points per game is second on the team, tied with Kinarra Lewis.
The Sharks sit at 5-2 in the conference, tied for second with Florida Tech, one game behind 6-1 Rollins. Saint Leo is 1-6, following up their only win (54-50 at home vs. Lynn) with a loss in their last league contest, 52-45 to Eckerd. This past Saturday, they were topped by Palm Beach Atlantic, 69-66. Jackson had 18 points and 17 rebounds in the loss, while Guzman led all scorers with 21 points
