FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (5-6-0, 1-4-0 SSC) will play its final road game of the regular season Saturday against the Rollins Tars (5-7-0, 3-3-0 SSC) at 7 p.m.
The Sharks are coming off a tough stretch recently, with their latest result coming in a loss to Florida Tech at home Wednesday. With four matches left, three of which in league play, NSU will have to take advantage of every opportunity to earn points and climb into the Sunshine State Conference Tournament.
Rollins enters the match with a sub .500 record but three wins in league play. In their most recent outing, the Tars lost to undefeated No. 4 Palm Beach Atlantic, 2-1. They have lost three of their last four matches, including shutouts at the hands of Eckerd and Florida Southern.
Despite the records, Saturday's match projects to be an intense affair. These two teams met in last year's SSC Tournament First Round matchup, in which NSU advanced on penalty kicks. The Sharks and Tars played through 110 minutes that evening, with both teams scoring a single goal. The match was sent to penalty kicks, where the Sharks were a perfect 5-for-5. Rollins made four, but All-SSC goalkeeper
Andrea Giombetti (Rome, Italy) made the biggest save of his career in the third round to help the Sharks advance. The perfect round of penalty kicks launched the Sharks to the semifinals for the first time since 2009.
The draw and loss on penalty kicks will be fresh on the mind of not only the players, but the coaches and local fans alike. It marked the first time Rollins had not played in an SSC Tournament semifinal match since 2008. Saturday, the Tars will be looking for revenge, while the Sharks will be looking to play spoilers in Winter Park, Florida for the second straight season.
