NSU LIVE AUDIO | FSC VIDEO | LIVE STATS | GAME NOTESFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 24 Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team aims for their sixth Sunshine State Conference win in a row and a season sweep of Florida Southern as they travel to Lakeland to take on the Mocs Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m.
The Sharks (16-4, 8-2 SSC) are coming off of a home overtime victory this past Wednesday against Eckerd, 69-66. When they defeated Florida Southern (9-10, 3-6 SSC) on Jan. 10, it started a slide for the Mocs that has seen them lose seven of their last eight games (six of seven in-conference). It was NSU's sixth consecutive win at that time.
The result was an 86-69 Shark victory, led by
Danielle Robinson's (Sr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) 22, the high total for a Shark this season. Her 3-pointer with 18:55 to go in the game broke a tie with former Shark Eliza Allen and gave Robinson the NSU women's program record all to herself at 185 (now up to 197).
Jasmine Wilkins (R-Sr., Miami) added 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
FSC was led that night by 17 points from Cashala Thompson, all coming in the first half, which at that point included 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. She became a defensive point of emphasis after the break for the Sharks, as they held her to zero points on 0-of-4 long-range shooting. On the season, she makes 2.6 3-pointers per game, second among all conference shooters.
The Mocs' loss on Wednesday, 60-48 on the road at Barry, pushed them under .500 for this first time this year. Christin Strawbridge was the only FSC player in double digits with 10 points, while Jensen Blassage added eight. The team has seen balanced scoring on the season, with seven players averaging between 6.8 and 8.8 points per game.
Kayla Wright (So., Lauderhill, Fla.) surpassed her career high in points for the second straight game with 21 on Wednesday. She is averaging 15.8 points per game over her last five, and is shooting over 62 percent during that span. Robinson and
Monaye Merritt (R-Jr., Philadelphia) were each a tally away from a double-double against Eckerd, with Robinson scoring 13 and pulling down nine rebounds, and Merritt totaling nine points and 10 boards.
This will be the last road contest for the Sharks before a three-game home stretch. At 8-2 in SSC play, they and Florida Tech remain tied for second place in the conference behind 8-1 Rollins. Both are on the road Saturday as well, for 2 p.m. tips: Rollins at Saint Leo and Florida Tech at Tampa.
