Box Score MATCH RESULTS
VALDOSTA, Ga. – After having their opener postponed Thursday, the No. 35 Nova Southeastern University tennis team made their first spring match of 2015 a memorable one, defeating No. 15 Valdosta State on the road Saturday morning by the score of 7-2.
The Sharks won five of six singles matches, and two of the three doubles contests to earn their first victory of the season.
Four singles wins came in straight sets: No. 2
Petra Jurova (Jr., Bratislavia, Slovakia), in her Shark debut, over Jennifer Rink, 6-1, 6-3; No. 3
Francesca Sella (Fr., Carpenedolo, Italy) defeating Joanna Lario, 7-5, 6-1; No. 4
Irina Constantinide (Jr., Galati, Romania) topping Anke Poncelet, 6-3, 6-2; and No. 5
Alexandra Johansson (Sr., Sydney, Australia) in a 6-0, 6-2 decision against Taylor Vinge. Also picking up a singles victory by default was No. 6
Carlee Rizzolo (Jr., Livingston, N.J.).
Sabrina Kierberg (Jr., Munich, Germany) and Jurova, as the Sharks' top double squad, combined to nearly shut out Rink and Poncelet, 8-1, while NSU gained another default victory, by the No. 3 team of Johansson and
Alex Kaeser (So., Woodstock, Ga.).
"Today was a very big win for us against a very good Valdosta State team," said head coach Stephen Schram. "The overall effort was terrific today, and I am especially proud of three newest Shark members: Petra, Francesca and Irina."
The now 1-0 Sharks continue their short road trip, when they take on another ranked squad in the No. 30 Flagler Saints, Sunday at 10 a.m. in St. Petersburg, Florida.
