FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 4 Nova Southeastern University tennis team took their final conference game of the regular season in a whitewash, 9-0 on Saturday over the visiting Florida Southern Mocs.
The Sharks (17-1, 7-1 SSC) swept through all three doubles matches before moving on to the singles portion and taking six straight-set victories to top the Mocs (6-13, 2-4 SSC) at the NSU Tennis Center.
In the top doubles slot,
Petra Jurova (Jr., Bratislavia, Slovakia) and
Irina Constantinide (Jr., Galati, Romania) were 8-2 winners;
Alexandra Johansson (Sr., Sydney, Australia) and
Alex Kaeser (So., Woodstock, Ga.) took the No. 2 pairing by an 8-1 count; and
Iryna Serdyuk (Jr., Boca Raton, Fla.) and
Linda Kornienko (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) combined to take the No. 3 match, 8-3.
On the singles side, victorious were Jurova, Constantinide, Johansson,
Carlee Rizzolo (Jr., Livingston, N.J.),
Bianca Roberts (Sr., Ft. Walden Beach, Fla.) and
Charlotte Cote (Sr., Montreal, Quebec). At No. 1, Jurova won 6-3, 6-1; Constantinide was victorious at No. 2, 6-1, 6-3; Johansson took the No. 3 draw, 6-4, 6-3; Rizzolo gave up just a lone point in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4; and Roberts and Cote had twin 6-1, 6-2 victories in their No. 5 and No. 6 slots, respectively.
The Sharks wrap up the SSC slate at that 7-1 mark and look to be the conference's No. 2 seed. They trail only 7-0 Barry in the conference standings. The Bucs have one more matchup, next Saturday at Saint Leo. But based on their win over the Sharks, the Bucs have seemingly have clinched the regular season title and SSC's No. 1 seed. Similarly, if Saint Leo were to upset Barry, they'd move to 7-1 as well, but the Sharks hold the tiebreaker with a earlier victory over the Lions.
There is one more match on NSU's slate, with Palm Beach Atlantic coming to Fort Lauderdale in a week's time, next Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m. It will be the Sharks' Senior Day, where they will honor Cote, Johansson and Roberts prior in pregame ceremonies prior to first serve.
