FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 4 Nova Southeastern University tennis team wraps up their regular season with Saturday's Senior Day matchup, hosting No. 39 Palm Beach Atlantic at 2 p.m. at the NSU Tennis Center.
Prior to the match, the Sharks (17-1, 7-1 SSC) will honor their three-member senior class:
Charlotte Cote (Montreal, Quebec),
Alexandra Johansson (Sydney, Australia) and
Bianca Roberts (Fort Walden Beach, Fla.). Then the squad will take on the Sailfish (16-5), ranked No. 8 in the South Region by both the NCAA and ITA. PBA has won 10 matches in a row (and 12 of their last 13).
The Sailfish, soon to be a member of the SSC, have gone 4-4 in their eight matchups against their future conference foes, the most recent an 8-1 win over Eckerd on the road last Friday. This too will be their regular season finale.
Among their two players to also be honored will be senior Veena Vasquez, who has played the majority of the team's No. 1 singles matches, where she is 10-6. Valerie Nagovitcina and Ana Reich each have 13 singles wins to top the squad. The top doubles duo for the Sailfish for the most part has been Vasquez and Nagovitcina, 8-8 in the top draw.
NSU rebounded from their only loss of the season to shut out Florida Southern last Saturday, 9-0. Another win Saturday over PBA could go a long way towards the possibility of hosting a portion of the South Region bracket following the SSC Championship. The Sharks are now No. 3 in the NCAA South Region as they were leapfrogged by West Florida in Wednesday's rankings.
Prematch Senior Day ceremonies will begin at approximately 1:45 p.m. Saturday, with first serve scheduled for 2.
