FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 12 Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team renews their local rivalry with Lynn on Wednesday night, traveling to take on the Fighting Knights at 5:30 p.m. at the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center in Boca Raton.
The Sharks (16-2, 8-1 SSC) outlasted the Fighting Knights (2-15, 0-9 SSC) 67-58 at the NSU Arena on Nov. 18. Six Sharks scored between seven and 14 points in the win, led by
Taylor Buie (R-Jr., Puyallup, Wash.) at that higher number. NSU outrebounded Lynn 47-34, and blocked eight Fighting Knight shot attempts, a season high. Also a season-best mark was the 11.1 percent 3-point shooting the Sharks held Lynn to on the night, 2-of-18.
Lynn has lost nine straight since defeating Southeastern, 61-54, on Dec. 10. Five of their last seven games have come against conference foes, with the most recent taking place last Saturday, a 79-53 loss on the road against Florida Southern. Senior center Charla Nelson-James leads the team in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots. She ranks second in the conference in rebounds, ties for third in blocks and is fourth in field goal percentage.
Last time out for NSU,
Molly Blomer (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) led the team in scoring off the bench with 18 in a 15-point win over Saint Leo, 79-64. Buie had 17 and is now at 996 in her career as she bids to become the seventh 1,000-point scorer in women's program history.
Buie is also only four 3-pointers shy of Eliza Allen for second place on the all-time 3-point list, while
Monaye Merritt (R-Sr., Philadelphia, Pa.) is six assists away from fifth place in assists after only one-plus season with the team. She would pass former teammate and current assistant coach
Danielle Robinson for that slot in the process.
The November win marked eight straight in the series in NSU's favor, pushing the Sharks to an 18-14 advantage all-time. Head coach
LeAnn Freeland is 8-1 against the team in her tenure.
