FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – With Hurricane Matthew finally out of the way, Nova Southeastern can now focus its attention towards ending Florida Tech's unbeaten home record when it travels to face the Panthers Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET.
The Panthers enter the midweek affair currently 4-0-1 at Rick Stottler Field, but the Sharks meanwhile are well-rested and have shown strides in the recent weeks against top-level competition. Led by the elevated play of
Filippo Mancini and
Bestun Mohammed, Nova Southeastern has held first-half advantages versus Lynn and Palm Beach Atlantic, teams both currently among the Top-20 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
In addition, Nova Southeastern may be catching Florida Tech on its schedule at the right time. Robin Chan's club jumped out to an impressive 5-0-1 overall start to the season, including a perfect 3-0 record in the Sunshine State Conference, yet has since slipped a bit following consecutive losses on the road to the same aforementioned Palm Beach Atlantic and Lynn programs.
A large part of the Panthers' recent struggles have attributed to their lack of consistency on the offensive end of the field. Through eight matches in 2016, Florida Tech ranks just seventh in the SSC in scoring with an average of 1.375 goals per game and enters Wednesday after suffering its first shutout of the season against the Fighting Knights.
The defense, though, has proven to be the backbone for the Panthers, allowing the league's fewest goals (9) thus far this season. Just a freshman, keeper Christian Moerch has registered two shutouts of his own through seven starts, and was even named the Division II College Player of the Week by the NSCAA on September 27.
