FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (11-8, 3-1 SSC) dropped game one of its series against the Lynn University Fighting Knights (12-8, 4-0 SSC) by a score of 5-4.
Alex Mateo picked up the loss, dropping his record to 2-3, while Lynn's Frank Grandinette (4-0) earned the win, tossing 149 pitches in a complete game effort.
The Sharks came ready to play on Friday night, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning after Mateo dealt Lynn a quick 1-2-3 in the top half of the inning. Jancarlos Cintron lead the inning off with a triple and Danny Zardon would later drive him in with a sacrifice-fly to deep left field.
Michael Hernandez would then come up with a clutch two-out base hit, scoring
Sebastian Diaz from second.
The NSU lead was quickly erased by Lynn's Alex Turner in the top of the second inning, as the Fighting Knights' centerfielder sent a two-run home run over the centerfield fence to tie the ballgame at 2-2. NSU battled back in the bottom of the third inning with two two-out doubles from
Andres Visbal and
Dylan Woods, scoring
Kevin Suarez and Visbal, respectively.
With the score 4-2 in NSU's favor, Lynn's John Silviano took matters into his own hands, hitting two solo-home runs in consecutive at bats to tie the game at 4-4. The Fighting Knights took the lead in Mateo's final inning of work, scoring one run on a two-out single to right field and that is all they needed, as Grandinette kept the Sharks scoreless for the rest of the ballgame.
Unfortunately for the Sharks, the offense was unable to come up with the big hit, as NSU left runners on base every inning accept for seventh and ninth. NSU outhit Lynn 13-10.
The Sharks will be back in action Saturday afternoon, looking to rebound after Friday night's loss. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
