FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (12-10, 3-3 SSC) handed the No. 6 Southern New Hampshire Penmen (13-1) their first loss of their respective season behind 12 hits, including four Sharks with multiple-hit games.
Cameron Churchill (3-0) earned the win, tossing three innings of two-hit baseball in relief.
The Penmen put the Sharks in an early 3-0 hole after a four-hit, three-run first inning. NSU's starter
Jonny Ortiz would settle down after the first, tossing a 1-2-3 inning in the second and third innings before giving way to
Cameron Churchill in the top of the fourth.
It didn't take the NSU offense very long to take the lead, as the Sharks plated one in the first and four in the second to take a 5-3 lead.
Sebastian Diaz doubled home
Dallas Perez to get the Sharks on the board and would later drive home
Kavan Thompson on a sacrifice-fly to bring the Sharks within one. Immediately following Diaz sacrifice-fly,
Brandon Gomez ripped a single to right field, scoring
Dylan Woods. With the score tied at 3-3,
Daniel Zardon sent a message, showcasing his light tower power with a two-run home run and NSU never looked back from there.
NSU plated two more in the third inning to take a 7-3 lead, thanks to RBI's from Perez and Jancarlos Cintron. The Penmen would pull within two in the top of the sixth, sending a two-run homerun over the left field wall, but it wasn't nearly enough. The Sharks added a single run in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to take a 10-5 lead and
Ronald Patella and
Devin Raftery kept the score there, silencing the Penmen bats.
Zardon registered three hits on the night, while Thompson, Perez and
Antonio Rodriguez each collected two hits of their own.
The Sharks will travel to Tampa this weekend to take on the No. 1 Spartans. NSU will look to match their regular season performance against Tampa in 2015, as the Sharks swept the eventual national champions in a three-game series at the NSU Baseball Complex.
