Sharks Dominate Barry On The Road, Sweep Series

Sharks blast nine home runs on Saturday afternoon.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (21-11, 11-4 SSC) cruised past the Barry University Buccaneers (18-15, 2-7 SSC) on Saturday afternoon, sweeping the doubleheader and series after winning by scores of 11-2 and 17-3. The Sharks hit five home runs on the afternoon, led by Brandon Gomez who belted three towering shots and Andres Visbal with two.

Game 1 – NSU 11, Barry 2

Riding their momentum from Friday night, the Sharks came out firing on all cylinders, scoring six runs in the first three innings to jump out to a 6-0 lead. The scoring began when Kevin Suarez singled home Visbal. Woods followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Michael Hernandez from third. NSU then broke out their big barrels, as Jancarlos Cintron launched a solo home run, followed by a three-run home run off of the bat of Visbal.

With the score 6-0, Barry scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, chasing NSU's starter Matt Hardy out of the game. Alex Kline took the mound in relief, earning the win after tossing four innings of scoreless baseball, while allowing just two hits.

Heading into eighth with a 6-2 lead, the Sharks bats decided they weren't finished. In two consecutive at-bats in the eighth and ninth innings, Gomez sent a solo home run and three-run home run over the wall, respectively. Jake Anchia topped the home run parade off with a solo shot of his own, making the score 11-2.

Devin Raftery tossed the final two innings in relief, shutting the door on the Bucs in game two of the three game series.

Game 2 – NSU 17, Barry 3

Game two was virtually over from the start, as the Sharks threw a six-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Brandon Gomez, in his third straight at-bat, crushed a three-run home run to dead centerfield. Two batters later, Antonio Rodriguez hit a no-doubter to right field, making the score 4-0. The Sharks weren't done there, as Jake Anchia smoked a two-RBI single to centerfield, scoring Dylan Woods and Suarez.

NSU then scored their seventh and eighth runs in the top of the second on a RBI-single from Gomez and a sacrifice fly off of the bat of Suarez, scoring Gomez. Diaz would do the same in the top of the third, scoring Anchia from third. With the score 8-0, Visbal stepped to the plate and crushed a three-run home run over the centerfield fence.

While NSU's bats were on fire, Julian Loret de Mola was cruising, tossing six scoreless innings, while allowing just two hits.

The Sharks tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning, increasing their lead to 15-0. Casey Gibson and Brendan Cutting both wore back-to-back pitches with the bases loaded, scoring Kavan Thompson and Anchia, respectively. Anchia capped the NSU offensive showcase with his second home run of the day in the eighth, a two-run shot to centerfield.

Barry would score two in the eighth and one in the ninth but it was not nearly enough, as the Sharks completed the sweep of the Bucs.
