Sharks Baseball Sweeps PBA, Extends Win Streak To 12

Sharks reach 12 straight wins, the longest streak of the Greg Brown era.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (25-11, 11-4 SSC) took care of the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (17-21) on Saturday afternoon, completing the sweep by winning game one of the doubleheader 4-3 and game two 10-4. Matt Hardy earned the win in game one, tossing a career high 7.1 innings. Devin Pellien earned the win, throwing four innings for the best outing of his Shark career.

Game One – NSU 4, PBA 3

NSU took an early lead, scoring one run in the top of the second inning, as Dylan Woods singled and the Sailfish threw the ball all over the field to score Kevin Suarez from first. PBA responded in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs off of NSU's starting pitcher, Matt Hardy.

NSU erased the Sailfish lead in the top of the third when Brandon Gomez smacked an RBI-single through the right side, scoring Sebastian Diaz from second base. Andres Visbal then hit a towering fly ball to centerfield in which the Sailfish centerfielder lost the baseball in the sun, allowing Daniel Zardon to score from second.

The Sailfish tied the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth, scoring one run on a RBI-double over the head of Dallas Perez in right field. With the game tied at 3-3 in the seventh, the Sharks received a one out single from Daniel Zardon and double from Gomez, putting runners on second and third for Visbal. After Visbal grounded out and Hernandez walked, head coach Greg Brown decided to have Zardon steal home against a Sailfish pitcher that went through an abnormally slow windup, causing a balk and allowing Zardon to score to make the score 4-3.

Hardy was pulled in the bottom of the eighth and Devin Raftery came in to seal the deal for the Sharks, doing just so as he recorded the final five outs of the game for his eighth save of the year.

Game Two – NSU 11, PBA 4

Game two began different than the previous seven weekend games have for the Sharks, as Palm Beach Atlantic scored first, pushing across two runs in the top of the first against NSU's starter Julian Loret de Mola who had control problems to begin his fifth start of the 2016.

The Sailfish lead didn't last long, as the Sharks posted five runs in the top of the second, beginning with a RBI-single from Kevin Suarez, scoring Andres Visbal. Following Suarez's RBI was Dylan Woods who dropped a bunt-single to the third base side. Suarez would score on the play after the Sailfish third baseman threw the ball down the right field line, also allowing Antonio Rodriguez to score. The Sharks concluded the inning with RBI-singles from Jake Anchia and Jancarlos Cintron, making the score 5-2.

The Sharks and Sailfish would each score one run in the fourth inning, as Gomez ripped a RBI-single through the left side in the top half of the inning and Loret de Mola allowed a bases-loaded walk, resulting in his day being over as head coach Greg Brown handed the ball over the Alex Kline. Kline would leave the bases loaded, but he had to pay for it as he wore a groundball off of his leg but recovered to get the out at first base.

The Sailfish would score their final run of the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth, sending a single to right field to make the score 6-4, but that was as close as PBA would get, as the Sharks poured another five runs on in the seventh and eighth innings, highlighted by Visbal scoring twice, driving two more in with a RBI-triple, and driving a third run in with a RBI-walk.

Devin Pellien earned the win, tossing four innings of scoreless baseball in relief, his best outing of the season.

The Sharks will be back in action next weekend beginning on Friday night at home against the Rollins Tars and concluding with a doubleheader on Saturday set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
