MONTEVALLO, Ala. – It was a great day to be a Shark on Saturday as the Nova Southeastern University women's track and field team won their first ever Peach Belt Conference Championship while the men's team claimed second overall for the third year in a row in Montevallo, Ala. The women's team won the competition smoothly with a new championship record 214.50 points, ousting UNC Pembroke by 55.50 points. The men's team scored 164 points, 35 behind the winner, UNC Pembroke.

Head coach Bryan Hagopian received the women's track and field Coach of the Year award for the second year in a row while Stefan Matula garnered the men's Field Athlete of the Year. Matula scored a men's team-high 29 points after winning the javelin and pole vault as well as placing fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put.

"I am so happy for our team, our student-athletes and our coaching staff," boasted Hagopian. "Everyone competed well this weekend and it would not have been possible without my assistant coaches, strength coaches and athletic trainers. We have been waiting for this moment since we joined the conference in 2012 and it is just an incredible feeling. I'll never forget how great it felt to finally raise the championship banner and trophy."

The day started with the final field event, the men's shotput. Logan Lowry finished fourth at 13.28m while Matula threw a season-best 13.18m placing fifth. Later on, Kamaria Johnson claimed her second gold medal with a win in the women's shotput with a throw of 12.64m.

On the track, the men started with a great performance in the 800m run. Raphael de Bonnieres and Dwayne Edwards finished second and third while running personal-bests 1:53.61s and 1:54.47s respectively. Benjamin Manuel also placed eighth at 1:56.28s while Wade White and Ian McQuate ran career-bests 1:57.25s and 1:58.94s.

In the relays, the women's 4x100m team won their third-straight PBC Championship with a provisional time of 46.23s while the men's team finished fifth at 42.17s.  In the final event, the women's 4x400m team put the icing on the cake, winning with a season-best and NCAA B-Cut time of 3:46.63s.
