MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women's tennis team went back to work in a non-conference event at Sunshine State Conference foe Barry, kicking off the BarryU Invitational on Friday at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
Day 1 Recap
Doubles
- The duo of sophomore Alexandra Yeardley and freshman Caitlyn Khan earned the Sharks' lone doubles win at two-time defending national champion Barry, defeating the tandem of Carla Davis (Barry) and Beatriz Windmuller (Palm Beach Atlantic) 8-3 for the most decisive result between the teams.
Singles
- Honduran freshman Natalie Espinal kept her hot rookie start going, defeating Keiser's Anais Gabriel 6-3, 7-6. Gabriel previously reached No. 16 in the Swiss national rankings.
- French Freshman Diane Follin-Arbelet came through with a three-set victory to defeat Keiser's Sarah Schaerer, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4.
- Junior transfer Sarah Wardenburg pushed the No. 3 player in the NAIA to three sets before taking the 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 loss.
"This is a good tournament to give different players chances, and look at different doubles matchups, being that it's a 'hidden dual' format," head coach
Doug Neagle said. "We saw some positives and some things that need work. Our freshmen Diane and Natalie both earned solid wins and I'm really happy with Sarah's progress this fall."
Shark Facts
- With the win on Friday, Espinal has opened up her rookie season with a 5-1 record at NSU.
- This marks the first competition for the Sharks since opening up with four days of competition in Lakeland for the ITA South Regional Championships.
Up Next: The Sharks will compete for two more days in Miami Shores this weekend. Next week, NSU will head north for the Panther Clay Court Invitational at Florida Tech.
