Sharks Let Late Lead Slip in Extra-Inning Defeat

NSU has four-game win streak snapped in 7-5 loss to Lander Saturday

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern sat just two outs away from clinching the series sweep of Lander, yet was unable to seal the deal, as the Bearcats erased a late, three-run deficit before knocking off the Sharks 7-5 in 10 innings Saturday at the NSU Baseball Complex. The loss snaps Nova Southeastern's previous four-game win streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Sharks received their third consecutive quality start of the weekend as right-hander Brady Acker took a considerable step forward on Saturday. Through a season-high seven innings of work, the junior surrendered just two earned runs while striking out nine. The lone runs came on a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to even up the ball game at 2-2. However, solo shots by Samuel Duran and Nick Gallo in both the fourth and fifth innings put Nova Southeastern back in front as Acker settled back in with four straight scoreless innings.

Leading 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Nathan Chevalier added some insurance with a timely, two-out single to score Ian Acevedo from second. The 5-2 cushion wouldn't hold up, though. Following a one-out hit in the ninth, three consecutive walks allowed the Bearcats to cut into the margin when Mike Fitschen stepped to the dish and laced a first-pitch single into left to even up the score at 5-5. The Sharks would load the bases in the home half, but a fielder's choice to second would soon force extras for the second day in a row.

With momentum completely in its favor, Lander continued its late-inning surge in the 10th with three straight hits to grab its first lead of the afternoon at 7-5. Gil Torres would limit the damage out the bullpen to keep Nova Southeastern within striking distance. Following a one-out double by Chevalier, though, back-to-back flyouts thwarted any chance at a comeback for the Sharks.

STATS OF THE NIGHT:
  • Chevalier recorded the first four-hit game of his career Saturday, finishing the weekend 8-of-13 at the plate.
  • The Sharks' three starting pitchers in the series combined for 31 strikeouts, allowing just six earned runs in 19.2 innings.
  • All nine starters tallied at least one hit Saturday, with five turning in multi-hit efforts.
  • Following a scoreless eighth inning, Ryan Maya has now yet to allow an earned run in 16.0 innings this season.
