MELBOURNE, Fla. – Conducted among each of the league's coaches, four Nova Southeastern women's soccer players were voted to the All-Sunshine State Conference teams on Wednesday. The Sharks' three first-team selections in
Hannah Christophe,
Emma Heikkila and
Paige Napolitano marked the most of any program in the 11-team league, while
Gaby Moreira earned second-team recognition, respectively.
Christophe returns to the first team after doing so as a freshman thanks to a senior campaign in which she's led the Sharks, and ranks second in the SSC, in both goals (13) and points (31). Earlier this season, the Canadian set the program's single-game goals record with five against Florida Memorial, a number that has helped moved her into a tie with Heikkila for fourth all-time in NSU history with 30 career tallies. She has also collected five assists in her 17 starts.
Heikkila becomes the first NSU player in school history to be named First Team All-SSC in three consecutive seasons. For four years, the senior has been a consistent leader in the middle of the Sharks' offense, and in 2019, has added to her illustrious career by notching 10 goals and seven assists in 17 starts. She ranks among the Top-3 in the SSC in all major offensive categories. Heikkila's seven-game goal streak during the middle of the season marked the first by an NSU player since 2006, while off the field, she's already captured her second straight First Team Academic All-District honor.
One of three team captains, Napolitano has led NSU both on and off the field this fall. The team's leader in minutes played (1,453) has started all 18 matches at center back. Her efforts have guided the Sharks to a program-record 14 shutouts, with their 0.270 goals-against averaged ranked No. 2 in the nation. Napolitano was named back-to-back SSC Defensive Player of the Week earlier this season.
Moving over from Lynn for her final collegiate season, Moreira has proven to be a welcomed addition for head coach
John Constable and the Sharks. The Miramar, Fla. native has held down the left back position, earning 16 starts in 18 appearances. Moreira has also chipped in offensively, providing NSU with three goals and an assist. This marks her third career All-SSC accolade.
Kathryn O'Brien of Rollins cleaned up with both SSC Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year awards. Embry-Riddle's Sophie Brundin and Marie Myhrvold Seim earned Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, respectively, with Barry's Sarah Dacey taking home SSC Coach of the Year.
In a repeat of a Nov. 5 matchup, NSU will look to knock off Rollins once again in Thursday's SSC Tournament semifinal round. For complete coverage of the action, visit the
